Re: Indian casinos

If the casinos are run by the stae then I would be VERY worried. The main problem with gov't run operations is they don't tend to understand economics all that well.
Also, I'd like to comment about the Desert Diamond casino mentioned above. I've been there (long time ago) and the machines are standard VP machines with primarily lousy paytables. I'd suggest playing at DD on Nogales hwy if you have a choice. I found better paytables there. I will be heading to Tucson next week so maybe I'll stop in again and see if what I'm saying is still true.

Are these gonna be state run as well as owned? Seems like I had read that Harrahs and others were bidding to run them. I'm a little underwhelmed by anything the states run. Of course I've also read where people think Harrahs is screwing up the VP at most of their casinos! So go figure.

JDanno,

While all casinos in Oklahoma and currently in Kansas, are ran by Native American Tribes, the ones I refer to in Kansas will be ran by the State.  I do not know what kind of policy will ensue concerning the paytables nor do I know what kind of rules they will regulate concerning the table games.  I am forced into optimism concerning the outcome though!  If done properly, the new casinos in Kansas (I think there will be 4 of them) have a chance to really create a tourism market that should bring millions of dollars into the counties in which the casinos are built!  If done poorly, it will be the joke that I think the Oklahoma casinos have become and a total failure for the State.

Missouri is somewhere in between the farce that the casinos are in Oklahoma and the wide open gambling we have in Las Vegas.  In Missouri, there is a $500 loss limit every 2 hours that is State regulated.  Other than that, the Missouri Casinos are pretty much wide open except that they have no Sports Books.

Oklahoma has table Blackjack but they charge $.50 per hand ante to play the hand and that ante increases with each multiple of $100 wagered.

My hope is that there are no such restrictions placed on the State run Kansas Casinos.

Those are both good questions SM and JDanno.  I do now know how the new casinos are to be "ran".  I know that the State is accepting or has already accepted proposals.  I do not know how much control the State will maintain over these establishments. It is the Kansas Lottery and their "review board"  that will be the governing body for these casinos.I know that the following have submitted proposals:Marvel Gaming-Binion (their properties are pretty well-known)Penn National Gaming (mostly manage casinos in Mississippi, and other states but I didn't see anything in Las VegasHarrah's Entertainment (everyone knows these folks!)MGM Mirage-Foxwoods (yeah, everyone knows about this group too)Harrah's and MGM are in competition for the casino near Mulvane.  Mulvane is closer to Wichita than is Wellington by about 15 miles.Penn National and Marvel-Binion are competing for the property close to Wellington.  One of these two sites will be chosen in this area of Kansas.  Another casino will go in close to Kansas City, Kansas.  Another out around Dodge City probably and another in Southeast Kansas close to Baxter Springs probably.Projections are that the casinos could open "as soon as" 2010 if there are no court delays, etc.  One thing is for sure, the Potowattmi Tribe that owns the Prairie Band Casino just north of Topeka (this was managed until this year by Harrah's) is fighting it.  They are calling the legislation unconstitutional because of agreements made between the State and the Indian Tribes when they built their Casinos on Tribal land.  This could cause a delay.  The fight against the State by the Native Americans is understandable!  Between the draw to the Kansas City casino and the one south of Wichita, much of the target population of the Prairie Band would probably chose to go to one of the Non-Native casinos.  How much of a fight they can muster is yet to be determined. There is so much about management of these properties and specific regulations imposed by the State that I do not know about.

To each his own.  And I've seen someone take $40 on .50 video poker -- DDB, no less -- and parlay it into 10X that.  It's skill and some luck, granted, but you honestly can't rule anything out.  I just think I was on a bad machine in the bank of machines.  But thanks for the info.... Sorry to burst your bubble but $40(unless you left out a zero or two) is not much play for any quarter game especially DDB.

That's where I was, at the "new" DDC Nogales Highway.  II'd suggest playing at DD on Nogales hwy if you have a choice. I found better paytables there. I will be heading to Tucson next week so maybe I'll stop in again and see if what I'm saying is still true.

I'm updating information on those new Kansas Casinos.  My wife told me that the word was out "from reliable sources" that MGM and Harrah'$ were out of the running for the central Kansas Casino.  Both MGM and Harrah'$ were proposing development in Mulvane, Kansas (just south of Wichita).  I think that the Segwick county folks that seem to have a huge influence on the location thought that was too close to Wichita!  I've never understood that.  The county that Wichita is in had the first shot at the casino and voted it down cold!  Yet, they have enough pull to influence who gets the bid and the location! So, it's between Binion's and Penn for the site down in Wellington, Kansas.  Wellington is 20 or 30 miles south of Wichita if memory serves me right.  It's right on the Kansas Turnpike (Interstate I-35) which is the main north-south corridor from Oklahoma City through Wichita to Kansas City.

Sorry,  did not want the post to be negative.  Yes, you can get that lucky but it is not probable nor likely.  I have many years playing video poker and I think it is best to down play luck because bad luck is more common especially with DDB.  I play this game exclusively and it can be merciless sometimes.
I guess my original post was a reflection of my own luck.  However, I do have a friend that has that type of luck.  He was always the one to sit down and hit the royal.  Furthermore, I do not know how true this is but it seemed that when he would sit at a machine next to me that mine would stop playing and he would start winning.  Must have been my imagination....

One more thing:  The friend I am referring to above had been so lucky that he got into the habit of using the local casino as his personal ATM.  It got to the point wher he counted on his luck and gambled money that he could not afford to lose.  Eventually this turned out to be a problem for him and he had to move out of Vegas due to his inability to play responsibly.
For me personally, I try to keep my expectations real.  Everytime I go to the casino and expect to win I lose my butt.  Evertime I have had a good hit it was unexpected.  For this reason I try to remind myself  what my odds of success are.  This way I have more fun and less emotional distress.

My wife and I have had a lot of success at Valley View Casino in northern San Diego county. They have a lot of vp machines, esp. since they have expanded a month or so ago. They have several multi denom 100 play machines which we've had a lot of luck on. Other than that I can say that  most of the casinos here in So. Calif. are really tight compared to the Vegas casinos, especially the ones up on Boulder hwy., or in the Henderson area.

Have you heard the latest? Mulvane, Ks. just annexed land so it can still try and get Harrah's there instead of Wellington.  What is wrong with Wellington?  Penn gaming and Binions were both approved for Wellington, what is wrong with those casinos?  Wellington is only 9 minutes from Mulvane.

Personally, I'd much rather see Penn or Binion's get it.  I was surprised to hear that they were still moving on Mulvane.  I thought that was a dead deal from information I got in the newspapers.
