Reno or Lake Tahoe

Post by Pster »

Hello all! We have a free junket through Caesar's with options to stay in Reno at Silver Legacy or Harveys or Harrahs in Lake Tahoe. Wondering which casino you think is better and if you have a preference of where to stay! Thanks.....

Interesting question, and the answer depends a lot on your criteria for defining "better".

Recently (Dec7-14), we spent seven days (and nights) in that part of Nevada as part of a Seven Stars retreat. Five were at Harrahs Tahoe, and two at the El Dorado in Reno. The El Dorado, Silver Legacy, and Circus Circus in Reno are all interconnected by what is called the ROW.

We have stayed four or five times at Harrahs Tahoe, and mostly enjoyed them all. We like the fact that there are several higher end restaurants at which to spend our $500 dining credit. Over time, though, the video poker games we like to play have gradually disappeared. There are still some pretty good opportunities, but you need a strong bankroll to play them seriously.

We decided to include a short stay in Reno this time, now that there are Caesar's properties there that look interesting. We liked what we saw, and would definitely go back there. There is a wider selection of higher return video poker games than at Tahoe, but not exactly the same ones, of course. And, there are significantly more dining options in the ROW.

When do you plan to go, and how will you get there? If you're flying, you will still have a one to one and a half hour road trip from the Reno airport to Tahoe, which can be somewhat tricky at this time of the year. When we left Tahoe on Dec.11, they were expecting a large dump of snow over the following days.

All in all, and assuming we do qualify for another Seven Star retreat, we will opt for the Reno option, since what little we were able to experience there in our short stay, made us think we would want to go back.

Neither choice is a bad one. Good luck with whatever one you decide on.

Could you elaborate? How, exactly, is it "easier to win in Reno?

I have the same offer through Caesars, only it's 5 nights w/o food credit. First one was out of Newark or JFK, but the most recent is out of PHL which works much better for me.

I checked vpfree2 and Reno has the better pay tables by a wide margin. The decent games at Tahoe are either ones I don't fancy or are only good at the dollar and up level. This goes for both the Caesars properties and in general.

I love the setting of Lake Tahoe and the outdoors activities but also would like to try Reno. We will probably fly into Tahoe and go to Reno for a day or two. Is there any type of bus or shuttle we could use instead of renting a car?

Unless you're planning to fly into Tahoe in a float plane, you won't be able to do that. You have to do it the other way around, i.e., fly into Reno and take some form of ground transportation to Tahoe.

I am not sure about this, but I do have a feeling that Caesars operates a shuttle between Reno and Tahoe, but it's not free.

Airport has South Tahoe Express shuttle service to get to Tahoe. I think they charge about $30 each way to get back and forth from airport to Tahoe. AFAIK there is no shuttle from CZR props back and forth between Reno and Tahoe. You will need to use South Tahoe Express. Once you get back to airport there used to be, pre covid, a free shuttle to CZR reno props. I think it is still free and still running.

Actually just back from Reno and I agree it’s better for VP. Wasn’t at a CET property this time but did notice something I’ve literally never seen before. I don’t play JOB much if at all these days so maybe it’s not rare but after finishing off my session was waiting for the wife to finish hers and was just looking threw all the games on the machine I was sitting at. It’s ,25-1 multi denomination and when I got to the .50 and the $1 both were not only 9/6 but the royal on 5 coins for both denoms was 5000. Blew my mind. Would have banged away but was leaving right then. Put it in the wizards poker calculator and it comes out like 1.00067%. I have heard of finding stuff by looking but this is a first. The dueces also improved at those denominations but didn’t write that down but it was significantly better than anything I saw reported on vpfree. Can’t wait to get back and go after it, wonder if it was just a one machine error now.
