Duluth, MN casino ordered to pay city $10.4m

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports today that a federal district judge ordered the Fond du Lac tribe to pay the city of Duluth, MN $10.4 million in back payments withheld between 2009 and 2011. That is the period from when the tribe stopped previously agreed payments from the off-reservation casino and when federal regulators found the agreement violated the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The tribe may appeal the ruling; the city is appealing the regulatory finding. The city had been using the payments for road repair and other city services.
