Worst casino?

Post by ko king »

Over the many years I've traveled and played at casinos all over the place I've experienced pleasure and agony for different reasons at all kinds of casinos. For many years the title of worst casino I've ever been to was owned by a somewhat local casino around these parts (took me a couple of hours to get there), tiny place, kind of ugly also. Anyway, you have to walk a considerable distance down a narrow walkway, a plank like what used to exist on pirate ships, only longer. Before entering the casino you have to pass thru a turnstile counter, not sure why it's there in the first place I could count the amount of players on both my fingers and toes, if it was my casino the last thing I would want to know is how few people were coming to my place. Once inside the casino it was actually kind a sad place, floors that crept and cracked as I walked and machines that looked like something that was bought from a carport sale or thrift store, these machines were old, faded reels and cigarette burns on the buttons (kinda like the place where all the misfit toys go). Once I found the few vp machines the place had it was no surprise to see they were old and in poor condition also, clicked on the pay tables and found the worst I had ever seen, 95.71% DDB. Like I said, a sad little place that nothing more than what I'll label as a neighborhood casino.
The title of "worst" casino I've been to no longer belongs to that place anymore, I've found a replacement, and for different reasons also. My new champion is fairly new to the industry but in a short period of time they seem to have mastered the art of how to insult the average casino patron in as many ways as possible and still stay in business, also helps if you're catering to captured audience which they are. No other casinos within many miles and they seem ready and willing to take advantage of the current situation and exploit players to their full potential. Okay now we have to start at the beginning. As I was waiting to get into the parking lot I wondered what the hold up was, a line of cars waiting to pay for parking, yep, they charged for parking on their lot, not a lot just $2, but still that takes nerve to me. Seeing as I had already made the drive I decided to pay the toll, I wished I had 200 loose pennies but instead only found 4 quarters, 6 dimes and 8 nickels, kinda confused the parking lot attendant, thought he might have to call for back-up to confirm I had indeed given him the right amount. I'm guessing he just assumed the coins I had given him added up to $2 because his eyes finally stopped rolling and his twitches stopped, he waived me thru. I was then directed by other parking lot attendants as to where I needed to park, finally wedged my Ford F-250 in between two other cars, wasn't sure if I could open the door and thought I might have to crawl thru a window. Thanks to the fact that I'm still pretty fit and trim and close to my original fighting weight I squeezed my way out. Once out I couldn't see the casino, considered going back for my binoculars but finally managed to spot the lights indicating the casino was indeed there. I began to walk toward the light and walk and walk and walk, how far away was this place, wished I wearing better shoes, maybe hiking boots, my feet were starting to hurt. Once I finally get there I find the place to look very nice, it's big and clean, crowded also. After a quick bathroom break, I start to look for the area where the vp games are. I locate the games and they have plenty to chose from, I'd estimate 75-100 tabletops. I'm kind of thirsty and decide to just find a place to play and wait on the drink girl to shop up and take my order. I discover the pay tables aren't good but no worse than most places now days. First machine I had decided to play and it has button issues, certain buttons worked sometimes but other times they didn't work at all. Cashed out my credits and sat down at another machine, same thing button issues, tried using the screen to hold cards but it didn't work very well either. Moved to another machine, same thing but I found that if you slapped the buttons hard it seemed to hold. Getting quite a workout fighting the machines and getting thirstier, where is the drink girl, look around to see if I can spot one, notice my vision is getting blurry from lack of H2O, nervous but not scared yet, surely relief will arrive soon. After a while I give up waiting for water to come to me and go in search of anything, can't find a water fountain anywhere, consider the bathroom I had found earlier but I've never drank from a toilet and I'm not quite that desperate................YET! Continue my trek and finally spot a bar, great, they have vp machines right at the bar (better pay tables also, that's weird). I start to play and the bartender ask if he can get me anything, you bet I say, I'll have a glass of water and a soda. He brings me a cup of ice water and a cup of Diet Coke, that will be $4 please. Yep, they charge for a cup of water and a cup of soda even if you're playing the machines. This is a first for me, never have I been charged for a soda or water while playing. I paid the $4 of corse because I knew I needed it before I even considered making the long journey back to my truck. Finally get back to my truck to leave and fully expect to be stopped by the same parking lot attendant and charged $2 to get out of the parking lot, didn't happen, guess they haven't thought of that yet.
So there you have it, my all time new casino to hate, going to hard to top this place but you never know as much as I travel. I may eventually arrive at a casino where they just mug you in the parking lot and confiscate you vehicle, until that happens this place reigns as King of the worst.
I won't give the names of either of these places because I feel everyone should be subjected to just how bad it really could be when it comes to casinos and gaming. If you ever happen upon one of these casinos it will make you realize and maybe appreciate that most casinos are pretty decent when it comes to taking care of their customers.

We have had bad experiences at casinos not tied to bad results as well. For example, hotel rooms that weren't cleaned and in deplorable condition. Since you live in the mid west/south, I doubt if I will stumble across the ones you have referenced.

I think we all can point to minor hiccups here and there but to top my list of "worst" casino ever I pretty much have to experience an assault coming from many directions. I would love to hear from others about bad experiences and would be surprised if anyone can top my "worst".

A few years ago my father in law had his car stolen while he was at the casino, after he got thru speaking to the police he then went back inside the casino to see if they could help him out. He explained the situation to them and said he couldn't get in touch with anyone to give him a ride home, they said "they were very sorry", when he ask, is that it, nothing more, they said "we're VERY, VERY sorry".

Mentioning the names of the casino can lead to defamation cases, so it is good you've kept it hidden. But yes it is such a horrible experience that I would not go even though I enjoy gambling games.

My major gripes with casinos are that there was too much cigarette smoking and losing experience was getting to much. But at least the conditions of the California casinos are in better shape than the old Vegas ones since they were built after 2002.

egad,,,,,  Well that was a monstrous post (and monstrously funny I might add!)I can only say I am "glad" i do not live where you live and be subjected to choices like that for gaming and such....makes me harbor a new found appreciation for Mohegan/Foxowoods (90minutes away), AC (5+ hours by Bus) and/or Vegas (6+ hours by air)......Regarding having to actually PAY while sitting at a video poker bar in which you are actually PLAYING:   In AC, several casinos (the old AC club, Tropicana and sometimes the old Showboat) have at times charged me for "Soft" drinks like Ginger ale, but usually around $1.25-$1.50.....at the Tropicana at the old Center Bar amidst the Table games, the last time I stayed and played there was 2012 and they did not charge for anything, but every time I had been there prior to that they DID charge......so do not ask me what the Standard is because I do not know.....Golden Nugget AC does not charge anything, as of MArch 2015......I've never been to a VP bar anywhere in Nevada where you had to pay when playing, anything, anytime, anyplace.....

I can [kind of] see being charged for a soft drink when there's a human involved, but it seems like every casino I've been to has a self-serve soda fountain.

The worst casino I've been to was a tiny Indian casino in Wisconsin in which the bingo hall was actually larger than the 'casino'. It was probably close to 15 years ago, but they actually had black-and-white screened video poker machines! Illinois now has video gaming in bars, but I haven't ever checked them out. It's weird to be driving through the middle of nowhere and seeing a roadhouse with a "video poker here!" banner out front!

Two first for me, paying to park and a drink, I had never done either and I play vp at bars all the time. I have been to a casino that charged for alcohol though, water and sodas were free.
