I should have mentioned that Friday and Saturday nights people stay until 1 or 1:30am because of alcohol. For Sunday nights it is around 10 or 11 pm because they have to wake up early for work next day.The retirees show up on weekday afternoons, it is peaceful for them and the casino is more than half empty during those times. Plus there are better promotions for them to take advantage of on a weekday afternoon. At nights the casinos can get rowdy and seats at the machines get competitive so they do not like it then. Forgot about Thursday nights are traditionally party nights to ease into the weekend.5-6 am is the perfect time to play on the weekend, no one gets up that early. I'll have to get to South Florida one day to check out the women one of these days.

been to hollywood once, the age was significantly younger and the view was quite nice. have to agree with phil, i think the reason the casino at tampa thins out early is due to the age of their typical customer and they are local. what i do disagree on is that these seniors having nothing else to do. activities for seniors in florida are no less available than in other parts of the country. i think this is what many choose to do and for some, it is one of the few things they are capable of doing. and, for women, a casino is normally a safe place to go with friends. being retired and having money allows for this activity. there was a time when i questioned why so many seniors were spending time in a casino, and we know some are not capable of handling the financial responsibilty. but, as i looked around at folks with canes, walkers; what else could many of them do, for some socialization. sitting at some senior center all day knitting and doing crafts does not cut it for everyone. i think it is just great when i see a group of women, playing as group, having fun and then doing lunch. not a bad day, after working all their lives.   i read once, that outside of some medical facility, the best place to have a heart attack is in a casino. somebody is always watching, they have medical equipment for emergencies and they know how to use it.

I should have added "for recreation" to my "nothing else to do" comment.  I'm a senior myself and have no trouble keeping occupied.  In fact I have to work hard at keeping my time to myself.  Unfortunately, I can't physically do the things that I used to do.  I'm not that old yet, but anything with a lot of physical activity is a problem.  I think casino gambling is a great activity for seniors. It gives them a chance to be with friends and have contact with the world outside their community.  I also keeps their mind exercised and gives them something challenging to think about. This idea that playing slot machines causes seniors to lose their food money is ridiculous.   You don't live that long being stupid and no healthy senior is going to let themselves go bankrupt playing slot machines.  I only wish politicians would stop being so hypocritical on this issue just so they can pander to the moral police.

thought about that. I presumed casinos were counter intuitive since all
that second hand smoke could increase heart attack.

Seniors seem to be the luckiest age group wise, they win on bingo most often and at the age group that commonly wins the lottery jackpots. Using their Social Security reimbursement for the casino entertainment is quite common.Problem gamblers are usually in their 30s-40s, but if people wise up and get past that without issue they will reach senior status (in Vegas it is 50 and up).

done a little research on problem gamblers. every thing i read suggests the number of problem gamblers is similar percentage of problem drinkers or drug users.   there is a much bigger problem with chronic spenders. gamblers never came close to getting in as much financial trouble as those who over spent and over borrowed.
