North Kansas Run

Post by MikeA »

I made a short run up to the Indian Casinos north of Topeka this weekend.  I didn't play a lot of Video Poker.  Only one casino had even mediocre VP with 9/6 DDB and 9/7 DB.  After playing 4 hours of Blackjack and doubling my buy-in of $100 ($5 double deck table), I called good enough, "good enough" and cashed in.  My wife wasn't quite ready to leave, so I did play DDB for a while on $10 worth of coupon money.  I didn't do well there and tossed another $20 at the machine trying to pull something out of it.  No such fortune.We drove back to the casino we were staying at (Prairie Band) and I made my cursory walk through the casino to see if anything had changed.  It hadn't.  Still $25 minimum Blackjack and video poker with paytables that make anyone who knows anything about pay tables, CRINGE!  I felt obligated to play though so put a whoppng $5 into a nickel DDB game that paid 6/5!  I had 25 credits left on that $5 when I held two Aces and drew two more plus a Jack for 800 ($40).  I played off the 25 credits and cashed out.Miracles do happen!  But I enjoyed a rerun of NCIS up in the room more than the VP there!We drove up to St Jo Missouri (Terrible's) Saturday.  Nothing to write home about with VP paytables.  I played a little and lost but then recouped it on the Blackjack tables ($5 6-deck).  I won enough to offset the minor loss on the VP and called it good.  I just can't bring myself to become attached to poor pay VP machines.  And, it is getting to the point in my neck of the woods, that poor machines are all that is available.

MikeA, sounds like we may be in the same area.  I'm new to VP and have been studying strategy, good paytables, etc. but have yet to play VP in a casino.  I was planning a trip this next weekend and thought that Prairie Band may be the best place to head to in KS, but after reading your post it sounds like I may be wasting my time heading there  :(  Any info on the other casinos in the KS and OK area in regard to decent VP would sure be appreciated!  (P.S. I've sure learned a lot reading everyone's posts! Glad to have found such a great site!)

Wannab;
Welcome to the forum. Perhaps KJohn and some of the others who play in the area will respond.

Not knowing how far you are from some of these I'm not sure how helpful this link will be but give it a review: For a little longer drive, it looks like Kansas City has some decent VP offerings. The competition probably forces the odds to be higher.

This link might help with an overview: Click on one of the casinos listed and then off to the left you will see "nearby casinos" click it and a map with nearby casinos will come up with mileages from the casino you chose.

You are right that Mike hasn't posted here in quite some time. Maybe this post will wake him up.

Hi VPPRO!!!   I'm from Mo. so I'll chime in and give you my sage advice.... You can find three casinos that offer decent odds in Kansas City, Mo.....Harrah's, Ameristar and Argosy.. Harrah's has all the VP machines upstairs which is so smoky you will be carted away gasping for air before you win..Also hot and dirty. Although I can get free rooms there I'll never go again....The food is Ok and if you don't care about dirt and smoke the machines are playable, but old and outdated...Sticky keys and not a great selection of games.....Ameristar is larger and the machines are scattered in different locations...OK place to play, but I've never personally won ONE cent there...It's very close to Harrah's. My favorite place is Argosy...It's in NKC and a nice property..Look it up for directions..They have a fairly good selection of machines and are the cleanest property of the three...You can tell I don't like smoke or dirt...I've hit more there and seem to get longer play for my investment...It seems to have more of the regular machines and less of the "carnival" machines or those where you have to put more in to win a bigger jackpot...All the fancy dancy new games..Rooms are nice and so is the food.

As for Oklahoma I'd run for my life...No regulations to speak of in the Wig Wam casinos...The state doesn't care what they do as long as they get their share, and if you research the laws in OK you will not find much info..Not a good sign if you want honest machines...Also all the casinos cater to slots and not VP...Over the years I'v played at Buffalo Run, Seneca and Downstream and can truly say although it's only an hour+ drive I don't go. After two years of abstinence from OK casinos I was coerced to head to Downstream last week...NEVER AGAIN..Terrible pay tables, and no one was winning..My advice head to KC..where the state keeps the casinos pretty honest and you just might have a chance of winning...Good luck...

I really can't help you any on VP in this area. I have played in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri, but it has been so long since I last played that anything I could remember would be "stale". I may make it "up north" to Topeka once a year (If I absolutely HAVE TO). Bu the VP is so poor that I don't play. I usually drive 30 miles north of Prairie Band (The Potawatmi Tribe's Casino) to the Kickapoo Tribe's Golden Eagle casino. They have a mediocre $5 Double Deck Blackjack table that I spend my time at.

It's about the same story when we go to Vegas. 95% of my time is spent at El Cortez or at one of the outlying casinos like that one close to Hoover Dam past Henderson.

Thanks so much for the replies everyone!  I'm in central KS and was hoping to find a place for a day trip vs an overnight stay, but it sounds like KC is the best place to go for VP.  I've called a few of the casino closer to me and was really surprised that most of them don't even have vp machines!  I guess I didn't even consider the impact that a non state-run casino could have.  Wow, I've got a lot to learn  lol  Thanks so much for the info and I'll definitely keep it in mind  :)

I'd never heard the term before, so I looked it up.Wikipedia says:"A wigwam or wickiup is a domed room dwelling used by certain Native American tribes. The term wickiup is generally used to label these kinds of dwellings in American Southwest and West. Wigwam is usually applied to these structures in the American Northeast.
The use of these terms by non-Native Americans is somewhat arbitrary
and can refer to many distinct types of Native American structures
regardless of location or cultural group."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WigwamIt's also the name of a specific casino in Nevada:http://www.casinocity.com/us/nv/fernley/nvmarymo/
