I think it would be alot more fun if we were competing for weekly high score prizes (such as store gift cards).  I would suggest cash but not sure of the legalities. Any feedback?

No, we can't just give cash to the highest scores as there are a lot of online gambling regulations that need to be followed.  There are all sorts of legal issues regarding cash as well as prize giveaways so it's up to the lawyers what is and is not appropriate.
 
But the plan is certainly to tie rewards and benefits to your play. I can't say any more on the matter at this time.

That ought to scare off several players. Of course, it can always be used for starting a fire on a cold day.
