Thanks, Bob for the validation. I like to think of "penalty" situations like this as an exception with an exception, as you (or Liam) pointed out, rather than a 2 thru 4 with a 6 thru 8. It seems easier to remember when you have a mental image as to why to deviate from basic strategy rather than trying to remember two ranges of numbers without that image.

I also know that some people like to avoid penalty situations whenever possible, which was my motivation for the calculations that preceded my post. Personally, I almost always want to know the best play except perhaps when there are dozens of tiny differences in what you call "power of the pack" situations. Even in such cases, if I can remember something like only draw 5 when there is a 3-2 suit split or when 4s and 3s are absent from the dealt hand, I will try and make the play with the highest expectation.
