5 on top and 5 behind does not change the odds anyway.

I play these contests most every day myself. Computer strategy will not make you a winner on these contests. I play the highest variance game I can find. I go for the biggest jackpot at every chance I get …

This illustrates something I have been saying for years. You must know what the goal is before you implement the strategy.
Helpful contest strategy from a seasoned veteran. At least it could be seen as amusing. Is this one of those strategies that "works for you"? And just what goal were you attempting to map out a strategy for?

Let's see, you have been here just short of 12 years, not counting the times of your numerous suspensions. And you play these contests "most every day"? Yet, in that time you have never won a monthly contest? Checking further you have never won a weekly contest. Heck, you have never ever won even a daily contest. So, what precisely makes you think you are qualified to advise on the best strategy to win contests? If it is not your personal experience, I guess it must be your vast understanding of video poker math that you have gleaned from "the experts."

Oh, I forgot to add that you have never won a 7-star contest.

Well, there are not too many winners, but let's examine further. You have never finished in the top 10 of a monthly contest, a weekly contest, or a daily contest. You have never been a 7-star finalist. You have never even qualified for the Tournament of Champions, let alone finished in the top 50 in the annual contest. So, do I have this right? Simply avoiding computer strategy is the way to go? And what goal is this strategy designed to achieve?

You have never even finished in the top 100 of a monthly, weekly, or daily contest? This is almost impossible to believe. You do subscribe to the theory that even a blind hog finds an acorn occasionally, don't you? Maybe instead you have stumbled upon a strategy that actually allows you to keep this incredible "perfect" oh-for-your-lifetime record in contests.

Well, no harm done. I don't imagine any of the regular readers look to your advice in the strategy section for contests (or pretty much anything else), but don't let that stop you from posting or thinking that there is value to others in your sharing.

Good luck in future contests … if you are actually trying to win … or at least post a decent score.

I think that perhaps Phil used the term "contests" unwisely, when he was actually referring to going for the top daily score in any particular game (which is a contest of a sort, but not one of the main ones).

Are you sure? Would you say it was unlike Phil to use terms inaccurately or unwisely?

No matter how you answered those questions, keep in mind that the original poster was talking about a daily contest, Gronbog chimed in about the best way to handle this mathematically. And, in the post that I quoted, Phil wanted to impress Gronbog by praising Gronbog's acumen before adding in his own suggestions.

Nevertheless, I appreciate your comment.

Correct. I do not play on this website to win contests. I play for the highest score of the day. I win those awards as much as anyone. Like I stated before, you must know the goal you are trying to reach before you know the strategy to use. Playing contests on this website is nothing like playing in a real casino.

The problem most players have when they go to a casino is they don't have a goal. They play until one of two things happen, they lose all their money or they hit a jackpot big enough for them to walk out. The later rarely happens, so they lose all their money most of the time.

Tedlark may have something to say about that.
