Las Vegas Casinos to Open June 4

Post by BobDancer »

Last night, May 30, there was a small amount of rioting in Las Vegas. Not nearly as much as in several other places in the country --- but more than zero.

I'm really not interested in discussing which groups of people are responsible for this. Wherever you are on the political spectrum, there are those on an opposite side you can point to with anger --- many of whom are only too eager to point back at a group they think you belong to. Let that go for now --- at least here. There are political sites where you can rant and vent with people who think just like you do.

My question is if there isn't peace in the streets, will the casinos re-open in four days? I have not done scouting but I suspect many casinos have armed guards surrounding their casinos. If rioting happens inside one of these places, millions of dollars of damage could happen very quickly. Casinos would be sensible to protect their investment.

On the May 28 episode of Gambling with an Edge podcast, we interviewed Ryan Growney, General Manager of the South Point Casino. This interview happened while George Floyd was still alive and basically unknown, and the riots were non-existent, so we didn't address this subject at all. Still, knowing how a casino prepares to reopen after three months was interesting to me --- and perhaps you too.

right now, I'm not at all confident that the casinos will reopen in Vegas on Thursday. The atmosphere might still be too volatile for them to do so safely. Bonnie and I will likely be fine --- totally staying out of volatile places --- but I fear greatly for the city I love and the country I love.

My inability to play video poker is really small change compared to what else is going on.

Two Points I'd like to mention:

First; if a person, while standing on a public sidewalk, throws a brick through the window of a casino what power would an "armed guard" be granted over this person, and

Second; It would be safe to assume that Rodeo Drive in California and Michigan Ave in Chicago could sustain the same damage as a Las Vegas casino and what have they been able to do to curb this type of damage?

People who commit acts of violence under the cloak of "demonstrating" are just trying to justify the illegal acts that they are committing. Watching coordinated acts of looting going on in Chicago was mind boggling. Rental trucks were driven to high end stores and then driven into the stores as battering rams when hordes of looters would then swarm into the stores and take anything they could grab. These COWARDLY and ILLEGAL acts do NOTHING to support any peaceful protest of the death of a man at the hands of Minneapolis police.

Edited to add: The monetary loss caused by rioting and or looting or the monetary value of the property should have no bearing but it will. Is it more "news worthy" to report that a casino in Las Vegas or a high end retailer on Rodeo Drive or Michigan Avenue was vandalized or looted vs. reporting that a local convenience store was vandalized or looted? And: will casinos in areas less likely of having acts of violence such as these committed on their properties push back if casinos are not allowed to reopen on the date originally posted?

Also: It was sickening to watch how "protesters" were openly trying to bait police officers across various major cities in the United States.

A few moments ago a well respected Chicago news reporter just called what is going on in Chicago right now: "Lawless Chaos." So much for peaceful protests.....

I think I'll pass on going to AC when and if casinos reopen. Agree with Bob that the inability to play VP seems meaningless now. I think it is only a matter of time before groups of law abiding people decide to take matters into their own hands. You saw it in South Philly where people in the neighborhood of their local Target store protected it from looters. If these looters are not arrested, charged and pay a price, this will happen over and over again. So glad i got out of NYC years ago.

Living here in Vegas, I simply don't care if casinos open this Thursday or next Thursday, so the concern of picking a casino that is not "volatile" for the problem gamblers is not my issue.
Many of my neighbors were permanently "let go", being various levels of MGM executives. I live across the street from a Metro officer, and another Metro officer lives in the house one street over.
Their safety and well-being matters more to me than if I can still go gambling on Thursday.

Meanwhile, my daughter lives in South Loop, Chicago, off Michigan Avenue. Her condo building turned off all the elevators in this high-rise building and locked down for two days. You needed to call building security if you had to go out. On her balcony, she has multiple photos of the brazen looters outside her building, parked, and unloading their bounty from shopping carts into their cars. Carts stuffed with electronics, shoes, and purses. U-Hauls parked on the curb, waiting for their partners to return with their carts.

Thinking about whether casinos open soon is silly. Finally, I have high respect for LV Metro, they did an awesome job for four days corralling these people, something Chicago had trouble doing.

DougJ - Now protesters are protesting to have the 699 arrested yesterday by the Chicago Police, released. Most of these arrests were for looting.

I also live in LV. The casinos will open on Thursday. Most, if not all, at least on the strip, have a security force to be reckoned with, and have been extensively trained to deal with these situations. Those fools will get mopped if they try to kick something off inside one of those casinos. Also, Nevada is a "stand your ground" and "castle doctrine" state.

The so called "protesters" are being played for fools by the professional goons from antifa.
They incite the rioting and the looting by criminals, hoping for retaliation by officials so bloodshed ensues and they stay out of the way.
They are "TERRORISTS" financed by socialist leftists like soros and the like. They are the ones with blood on their hands!!

Not surprised by that.

Yet, the looters were essentially ignored . . . while they were loading cars/U-Hauls in front of my daughter's condo building, numerous police sped past them, ignoring these criminals. Just woefully understaffed, I read that 65,000 emergency 911 calls were made in Chicago that day. Stunning.

I doubt that each casino's security team can individually contain hundreds of people storming the building. Assuming they all open on the Strip this Thursday, I expect a large Metro presence.

It was no accident that the crowds chose to congregate in proximity of major shopping malls, such as Fashion Show mall or the Miracle Mile shops. Metro wall of humans was prepared. It was no accident that Metro vigorously and successfully defended all entrances to the Fremont Street Experience.
El Cortez, not on that street, sustained extensive vandalism, including a broken glass door.

We love and appreciate Metro police.
