We'll have to meet up down here sometimes. Now that SFA has long been paid off we rarely make it BC way. BTW: have you ever tried Paragon Casino? At one time they had great pay tables like Coushatta.

Have you been keeping up with University of Houston recruitment for next year? They landed three really good pieces through the transfer portal as well as two or three really good freshmen. Added to a core coming back from this years final four team of Sasser, White, and Mark next years team is going to be fun to watch.
Can't wait. It's amazing what a great job Sampson has done with UH men's basketball program.

Thanks for the offer to meet up. Likewise if you and your wife should you have occasion to visit Bossier City. At the very least we can get you a free room and treat you to dinner.

I am not familiar with Paragon Casino.

Houston Coogs!
Oh yeah, keep up with the UH blog everyday. Now, we need to fix the football team and baseball team. Track and Field still on the top of their game and Conference Champs every year. #speedcity The new freshman sprinter already has incredible 100M times and qualifies in the 4x100 for nationals.

NCAA posted the Regional selections today. Looks like we’ll have excellent representation.

Just a couple of quick notes on the men’s side, 7 qualifiers out of 48 total (15% of the field) for the 100m and 6 qualifiers (13% of the field) for the 200m. H-Town Speed City indeed.

National Regional Qualifiers just posted this week after they won the Conference Title again setting multiple Conference records. Having two Olympian Coaches, Head Coach Leroy Burrell, (fastest man in US at one time) and Carl Lewis, yeah that Carl Lewis as assistant coach is incredible. Their Associate Coach is Kyle Tellez (son of Olympic coach and long-time UH coach Tom Tellez)
  • 2 qualifiers in the 400m. No qualifiers in 800, 1500, 5000, 10000 or Steeplechase.
    2 qualifiers each in 110H and 400H.
#1 and #9 in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays respectively.
No high jumpers, but 3 qualified for Pole Vault.
1 long jumper, 3 triple jumpers.
1 qualifier each in shot put, hammer and discus.

LL, I am afraid we are in for more mediocrity with our football program until we bite the bullet and get a new head coach. We have had three successful head coaches since the Yeoman years. Unfortunately because we do not play in a power five conference each of these coaches left UH for more money elsewhere.

The Dana Holgerson led Houston Cougars for me anyway are hard to watch. It is interesting to look at how the dynamics have flipped between UH football and basketball since Sampson took over the men's BB program in 2014. Unless something unexpected happens, men's BB at UH is set to be outstanding for as long as Sampson remains at the helm. The football program on the other hand is a mess.

I was not a big fan of Tony Levine when he was head coach at UH but at this point I think I would prefer him to Holgerson. It is time for a change. Mediocre recruiting, player development, and in game play calling and decision making has me scratching my head wondering why he is still around. Unless he comes through in a big way this year, I boldly predict we will have a new head football coach this time next year.

As far as track and field goes, I really don't keep up with that. Other than knowing Carl Lewis is one of our more famous alumni. Glad to see Carl Lewis is involved in their coaching. Must be a big plus in recruiting.

Here you go LL. By the way, extremely rare, but about 10 years ago, I saw one of these nice Kittys!!!!, in a salt marsh about a mile from my house. Quite an impressive animal. We have plenty of Bobcats, but almost none of these guys.

seemoreroyals,
so were you at UH? When?
Boy, do I agree with your pigskin analysis. DH is living on his past rep and playing out the contract. He's not 100% into the commitment from all I see. One thing about Tony Levine, I think I read on the CoogFans blog a month ago, that he ended up with 7 players he recruited which played or are still playing in the NFL. He knew how to recruit. But, now he's making tons of $$ with his Chic'-fil-A franchise in Fort Bend area.

I'm an oldie goldie from 73 and 76, pre Southwest Conference and then the early hay days of the SWC. Loved winning the SWC title 3 of the first 4 years. At that time, they feared our Yeoman led football team. Been in dead center end zone for more years than I can remember following them. It took me more than 20 years to lose the "Notre Dame/UH Ice Bowl" toes and fingers. :D And, yes!! the Notre Dame receiver was out of bounds. :x Then Phi Slamma Jamma came along. Nice to see basketball return to the glory days. Ironically, using solid blue collar kids who work their butts off.

Gosh darn I hope in my lifetime we can see casinos become legal in Texas. They better start moving we're sending too much $$$$$ to La and OK and even some to New Mexico. What a wasted opportunity!

Great picture. Does Shasta proud!

Guess I am brain dead LL. First, I had no idea Texas didn’t allow casinos Bummer. Second I had to look up Shasta to see she was your guys live mascot from till 1989 I think. Ct rakes in 25 percent of the 2 Indian casino’s slot revenue. Huge. I am sure you guys could use some of that too. I will look up the numbers just to give you an idea

LL, went to UH just as you were leaving. 1976 to 1980. I was there when we won the SWC 3 out of 4 years. I was at the game in Austin when we beat the Longhorns 30-0. I also remember the game you were referring to where Joe Montana led Notre Dame against us in the Ice Bowl/Cotton Bowl. What a bitter defeat. I really miss the SWC. Phi Slamma Jamma came along 82-84 and will always be remembered by not just you and I but by sports fans everywhere.

Glad to hear Tony Levine is doing well. At the time I did not like him as a head coach but the more I look back he really was not as bad as I thought he was. Art Briles, Kevin Sumlin, and Tom Herman built such high expectations especially on offense that when Levine arrived and stumbled he was quickly dismissed. A coach I have my eye on and I hope he becomes our next coach is the HC at Sam Houston State. Congrats to them for winning their first championship since 1964.

In regards to casino gambling in Texas it does not appear likely we will have any luck bringing it to Texas any time some. I believe it was Dan Patrick or one of the other state level political underlings that went on record the other day and said we would never have casino gambling in Texas. It would be convenient for Texas gamblers and bring in revenue for the state to help take the pressure off higher sales taxes and property taxes and forestall the possibility of a state income tax any time in the near future.

Gambling certainly has its social pitfalls but why give the revenue to your next-door neighbors? I guess unless the right pressure is placed on the right politicians and most of them are probably well entrenched it won’t be anytime soon
