Best way to decide what to hold

I'm just getting started learning video poker seriously after playing casually for a long ng time, I'm starting with Bob Dancers Jack's or better manual and playing with corrections online. One error I'm making that can be easily corrected is that I miss obvious holds like a high pair when I'm dealt 2 pair. What is the best way to look at a hand and differentiate between the different combinations. Do you start with the top of the chart and go down or left to right or something else? Sorry if this is one of those things people ask all the time but it seems like an easy fix that I should implement at the beginning.
