Three to a Royal Over Paying Pair?

I'm a recreational player and play an average of about 7-8,000 hands a month. I play all the popular VP games, but find I can play JOB the longest for the money. When playing JOB, it seems the only way to get a big payout is to get a Royal. In JOB, my WinPoker says the better play is to keep a paying pair and throw away three to a Royal. I am not disputing the numbers, but this doesn't make any sense to me. I have been averaging about 1-2 Royals a year over the past 5-6 years and a lot of them came on three to a Royal draws. How much of an error is it to keep three to a Royal and throw away the two paying face cards? How about keeping Ace/Tens?

JoB players will lose almost .70 if you toss the paying pair in favor of the RF3. DDb players hold the RF3 over the hi pair. Many penalty cards to watch out for playing different variations of VP. Stick to one game and master it, then learn others or you end up giving back ER for the mistakes you commit. The RF3 must be sequential BTW (TJQ,JQK) for the DDB hands. Holding AT suited is OK if you have two wild cards in DW, otherwise, you hold only the ace. I failed to ask if there was a progressive bonus since this obviously, affects strategy.

I've thrown away aces and held 3 to the royal once and hit the royal.
That was a DDB .25 machine. I don't remember the pay table, it was
over 5 years ago....
I don't do that anymore as I have become a smarter VP player..if there is such a thing!
But, I do throw low pairs away if I get 3 to the royal... Yea, I'm sure not the right strategy but what the hay....

Lots of strategy in VP but also a lot is Luck...I've done both. Held 3toRoyal and thrown the high pair. Got the royal once. Sometimes I find it's just fun to go with your gut and gamble a bit despite the proper strategy...Same with pay tables. I played at Biloxi recently and the pay table was not good. Still walked with $1500 on a DDB triple play getting the 4A/s delt twice in three plays. Got the kicker on one line...So the poor pay table was a moot pt. You just never know...I can play almost perfect in DDB but sometimes I throw the rules to the wind and still come out ahead. Other times I can play perfect and loose my pattotie...

FloridaPhil,
My wife and I both play extensively sometimes 6-8 hours about 3-5 times a month with an average of 400 hands/hour. I play the percentages/recommended play method- she plays the percentage/hunch/feel method.
She loses more $ and hits more RFs than I do. We have averaged a little over 1 RF/month over the past 5 years with her hitting 60% of the time. Since I play lots of multi-hand nickels it is hard to accurately evaluate, but during the first few years when we both played exclusively single hand we were generally about even on RF each year.
She will throw a paying pair away often for 3RF if she feels the "feeling". Me, I usually play the percentages. This makes it hard for us to play together which we occasionally do for finance purposes. We resolved our issue by "whoever is making the play - making the decision".
Choose your VP poison! I seen both methods win and lose.

Is your #1 concern STILL about Harrah’s pay tables or why Stations is cutting back on their slot club benefits?
Will the prez use waterboarding to protect his family? Or do we need the ex vp for that?

Hey oej that is all very interesting. You should have a newsletter or web site that focuses on video poker where you talk about all these things having nothing to do with video poker. It will make you one of the best experts about video poker. I think that population safety is number one. But instead of doing anything about population safety I will instead complain about it and play video poker instead because I discovered some secrets that can help me beat the game instead of play it like those losers who are so much better at things like "math" than I am. Oh now I'm not making any sense. But the casinos want you to make sense. So my guess is I am on the track to beating them.
Wow. Sorry. No idea where that came from I just needed to vent. That hapens when you eat too many beans.

Keep it between the lines there Mr. Eduardo.
I think I will start parting my hair down the middle like a dufus.
