Split Card Poker Strategy for DDB Players

Post by alpax »

Title limitation is too short, I meant to include ongoing progress...

This strategy thread will be geared towards the players who have prior experience playing DDB and are looking to play DDB on Split Card Poker. It will focus on the adjustments that will be needed for players to have more success towards what is shaping up to be a difficult game.

If you feel the need to improve your skills on DDB, this will be the guide I would recommend:

Winner's Guide Volume 6 by Bob Dancer and Liam W. Daily

I gauged some excitement over this game, more than Color Match Royals Poker. This specialty game has been introduced in August 2015 and has been available to all registered members on VP.com a few months ago.

You can play it here - http://www.videopoker.com/play_games/free/?game=118

The original discussion thread of this game - http://forum.videopoker.com/forum/forum ... +Card&PN=1

The motto stated on this game is “BET MAX FOR MORE WAYS TO WIN”.

Now to look into the Split Card game mechanics:

There can be only 1 card that is designated as the “Split Card” out of a standard 52 cards, it will have value of 2 cards in a single card slot. The “Split Card” will be a card that is of the same suit, a rank lower (if an Ace, the lower rank will be the King), a rank higher (if an Ace, the higher rank will be the 2), or the exact rank.

Hence on the draw:

(1 Split Card) * (51 choose 4) = 249990 ways to deal 5 cards from a standard 52 card deck with one of them being a split card.

Theoretically the frequency of the split card will occur on the deal:

249900 / 2598960 = 1 out of 10.4 hands (about 9.6%)

The description on VP.com states that the frequency of the split card appearing is roughty once every 4 hands which will make it (25%). This would mean the bonus feature is not completely random and will be more in a controlled situation.

To further support that that fact, the returns for this game are exactly the same when playing 5 coin wagers and the split card bonus feature enabled. When you bet 5 credits per line, you are getting the standard multiline video poker game. From a player experience standpoint, the split card can help players form the premium quads easier on DDB, so I would think the split card frequency is less than other games.

My best recommendation will be that I would suggest if the player is not confident in making the right plays when drawn a split card is to just bet 5 credits. Otherwise the non-optimal plays will be very very costly towards your bankroll.

For the daily and weekly contests, you are forced to play the Split Card bonus feature. It will not cost any monetary for making non-optimal plays but will only help you achieve the big hands to get you a big score..

The Split Card can also appear on the draw as well, but that is also controlled by the game as well:

Discrepancy #1

The Queen of Clubs is split on hand #3, but not on hand #4 and #8

Discrepancy #2

The Split Card on hand #1 is 9 and 8 of clubs and on hand #9 it is 5 and 6 of hearts, thus relying on getting a split card on the draw is not feasible since the odds of it happening will not be known.

The only thing the player can control is 1) the decision to play the game with the bonus feature enabled 2) making the optimal hold with the dealt 5 cards.

Each of the 249990 dealt hands were evaluated for the optimal hold out of the 32 possible hold. Some hands have 2 holds that yield the highest expected return as a tie and those have been evaluated. Afterwards the standard DDB optimal hold is evaluated without taking considering of the split card. If the two are different, it will be analyzed.

For the Split Card, since it will yield 6 cards, the best 5 cards of the 6 possible will be evaluated.

I have best decided that the discussion for this strategy should be broken up into different parts. I divided them into the ranks, since a split card of the 3 of diamonds will be no different than the split card of 3 of spades. It is sorted by tiers in which the Split Card type in which I believe has the greatest potential return.

This is a very complex game to analyze so it will take some time for each situation to be evaluated.

Tier 1

Ace Split Card
Possible Values: 1) Ace / King Suited 2) Ace / Ace of Same Suit 3) Ace / Two
Post Location Link: Link

I suspect that an Ace split card will be by far the most valuable to belong in a class of its own. The Ace King split contributes to 2 cards to a royal flush and will increase the chance to at least get a high pair to get. The duplicate split card Aces on its own will be a high pair, but it really helps towards getting the quad which will pay 800 credits and all the player will need is to get 2 out of the rest of the 3 Aces in the deck to complete it (getting all 3 Aces will produce a 5 of a Kind which pays out 3000 credits). The Ace and 2 split increase the chance towards hitting quad aces and even a jackpot quad, the aces with a kicker or 4 2’s with a kicker.

Tier 2

King Split Card
Possible Values: 1) King / Queen Suited 2) King / King of Same Suit 3) King / Ace Suited
Post Location Link: Link

Queen Split Card
Possible Values: 1) Queen / Jack Suited 2) Queen / Queen of Same Suit 3) Queen / King
Post Location Link: Link

Jack Split Card
Possible Values: 1) Jack / 10 Suited 2) Jack / Jack of Same Suit 3) Jack / Queen Suited
Post Location Link: Link

In traditional video poker games without wildcards, high cards are often held. The Split Card Poker bonus allows the benefit for a player to start off with two of them using a single card, hence the value is incredibly increased. All the split cards are either 2 to the Royal or a high pair. The average chance of winning gets substantially higher.

Tier 3

2 Split Card
Possible Values: 1) 2 / Ace Suited 2) 2 / 2 of Same Suit 3) 2 / 3 Suited
Post Location Link: Link

3 Split Card
Possible Values: 1) 3 / 2 Suited 2) 3 / 3 of Same Suit 3) 3 / 4 Suited
Post Location Link: Link

4 Split Card
Possible Values: 1) 4 / 3 Suited 2) 4 / 4 of Same Suit 3) 4 / 5 Suited
Post Location Link: Link

These may be the lower rank cards whose pair is not an automatic win, but the quad value of these cards are higher than the other low rank cards for those who know DDB well. Furthermore, the split value of the card can serve as the kicker that is needed to form the premium hand.

Tier 4

Link

10 Split Card
Possible Values: 1) 10 / 9 Suited 2) 10 of Same Suit 3) 10 / Jack Suited

5 Split Card
Possible Values: 1) 5 / 3 Suited 2) 5 of Same Suit 3) 5 / 6 Suited

A five card straight in poker cannot be formed without a 5 or a 10, thus these split cards are slightly better than the tier below. The 5 / 4 split can help achieve the quad 4s which pays a little more. The 10 / Jack split can produce a high card as well as two to a royal flush.

Tier 5

Link

9 Split Card

8 Split Card

7 Split Card

6 Split Card

Possible Values: 1) 2 Card Straight Flush from 5/6 through 9/10 2) Pair of low cards 6 through 9

These split cards will not have as much impact as the other split cards, but it still provides general benefits as provide 2 cards towards a straight, flush, or a straight flush. The split pair will require at least some complimentary cards to help form 3 of a kind, full house, 4 of a kind, or the still possible jackpot hand: the 5 of a kind. If a split pair is just held, there will be 1 in 59 chances the 4 new cards on the draw will complete a quad. Compare that to converting a pair to a quad which is 1 in 360.

General Findings

1. Split Cards are rarely ever discarded, unless a 3 of a Kind or a Straight Flush draws are present

2. Only Suited Cards, Straight Flush Connectors, or Ranks that pair up with the Split Card are normally held.

3. Consolidating 4 Cards into 3 Cards or 3 Cards into 2 Cards with the assist of the Split Card has much value.

C. King-Ace Split - Bracket Indication: King is the Regular and A is the Split [ K ♥ | A ♥ ]

Almost Redundant to the Ace-King Split
Recap:
1. King-Ace Split beats 4 to Flush, low pair, 4 to Straight, 3 to Inside Straight Flush, 2 to a Royal, 2 High Cards,
2. King-Ace Split with 1 suited card 2-9 beats high pair, 3 to Outside Straight Flush
3. King-Ace Split with 2 suited cards 2-9 or King-Ace Split with 1 suited 10-A beats two pairs
4. Break up a full house of King Full of Aces when Split Card is present. Trip Aces is more valued.
5. King-Ace Split with unsuited Ace or King beats 3 to Royal
6. Go for the Royal Flush every chance you get it in a span of 3 cards, do not hold redundant high card that is covered by the Split Card

Holy moly. I was secretly hoping you would tackle this one, Alpax.

I was at a local casino when the first put this game in. Gaming control happened to be there and they were verifying the paybacks. Everything I overheard was well over 99%, so next time I gave it a try for nickels.

My impressions were that the strategy is VERY complex and the split card didn't happen nearly enough on the deal to justify the 10 coin bet. I quickly gave up. These machines undoubtedly hold way way more than other VP machines. I watched one brave soul playing 10 play quarters. Every few minutes he would feed in another hundo.

I still plan to progress on this but will do it during the breaks in the baseball postseason (ALCS is done, NLCS will end during the weekend). I almost have the Queen and the Jack analysis completed and I'll try to have the 2, 3, 4 completed by the end of the weekend, I think those are the split card values that the players wish they had the most.

I quickly noticed that they're making these new games quite difficult now and days. I think the trend as of late has been avoiding the multipliers (I recall gambling experts state casinos loathe volatility) and using unique scenarios such as colors, peek ahead card, burn card, 6th card, split card, and coming soon flip card. Play single line while you still can, would be a VP doomsday if the casinos start putting in these unique games.

In Split Card Poker, for the high card splits, 60% of the time you would have to make a different hold than normal DDB. Many of these mistakes could cost the player at least 8 credits, which is $2 a hand! I'll provide more details about that later on.

I've decided it was best to change back the approach to strategy charts. More than 60% of the hands dealt with a Tier 2 Split Card will deviate from the standard DDB strategy. Doing comparisons will be difficult to list out and remember each one.

The Tier 2 Split Card shares similar strategy within.

On the Main Thread I think it will be best to mention common tips among the strategy approaches.

A.     King-Queen Split Card

1.     Dealt Royal Flush (4000)
2.     Dealt Five of a Kind (3000)
3.     4 Aces (1106.38)
4.     4 2s, 3s, 4s (502.1277)

6.     4 Queens or 4 Kings with Split Card Assist (308.51)
7.     Straight Flush (250)
8.     4 5s thru Kings (250)
9.     4 to Royal Flush in 3 Cards with Split Card Assist (182 to 194.54)
