I've also had optical migraines for years.  Although it is difficult for health professionals to zero in one the exact cause inside the brain, just looking at a computer screen (flashing lights or not) can bring one on as can bright sunlight and some other situations that are not normally stressful.  Although there are several days (98-99% of them) when I work on a computer for 8 hours plus that these do not occur).  The first time I had it happen was during a college statistics exam that I really needed  to pass (many years ago); to me that was really stressful.  During the summer, I have sometimes had this occur 4-5 times in the same week while playing golf (which is not stressful to me).  I am one of the lucky ones that seldom if ever gets headaches following the flashing auras.  The best remedy that I know of when they occur is to relax in a dimly lit and quiet room with my eyes closed for 15 to 20 minutes.  The flashing persists when the eyes are closed but worrying does not help the situation but exacerbates it a bit.

One time during play in a golf league, I asked my opponent if he minded if I just lay down outside on the tee for a while before finishing the last hole.  I was not concerned that the migraine wouldn't pass; but my match was tied and it is difficult enough to hit a golf ball square when your vision is good.  It bothered the two upcoming foursomes a bit to see someone laying down on the tee, but 20 minutes later I had recovered.  Unfortunately I bogied the last hole anyway...but the good news was when I went into the clubhouse I found that my opponent had bogied the hole also and we tied.

Both parents and my siblings also have had similar experiences with these migraines...so I guess I could blame my problem more on bad genes than on my environment.  Freaking out about them is not helpful either during or after nor is trying to place the blame for these strange phenomenon on your surroundings.  Although I have had health professionals tell me that the cause is generally unknown, they also want to know me to report if the flashing auras are more frequent.  When I have reported this they have written it down in the file but done nothing nor prescribed anything.  What they are really concerned about that I haven't yet experienced is a blinding white light indicative of a detached retina.  Then you can worry or presumably report the situation to a doctor.

I don't think it is generally good to try to scare people just because you want others to solve your problems for you...but that's just me, I could be wrong.

What does that even mean? Are you seriously suggesting ginxx should just continue to play through the flashing, knowing now it is a trigger for eye migraines.
I'm genuinely glad you have a handle on yours and your right in that it is better to try and relax and lay down with eyes closed till it passes. I was saying I also had a eye stroke, so for me it has become a matter of, is this a eye migraine or another stroke. I'm not saying other people with eye migraines will get a eye stroke, just that I did. I wanted, want ginxx only to know he or she is not alone and that it is serious and it is scary when something like this happens to you for the first time. You say don't blame your surroundings, what does blame have to do with it? If you are aware of certain triggers, why would anyone subject themselves to them. ginxx wrote here because she knew the flashing caused her eye migraine, wrote asking for some way to stop the flashing ads. short of that ever happening I stick by suggesting he or she does not subject themselves to a known trigger. I'm not trying to offend anyone on the forum, my heart went out, goes out to ginxx and anyone who suddenly one day experience a eye migraine.

I'm sorry to hear about your problems and hope your future health is great.  And I'm glad to hear that your motives were solely for the health of another.

I was responding with another point of view; i.e., that optical migraines, while scary at the time, are not a cause for panic.  I've seen firsthand the panic when both my mother and sister (at different times) thought they were going blind.  When they understood the situation more, it was much easier for them to deal with the symptoms when they occurred.  I understand from your latest message that you were trying to help.  Maybe I misinterpreted your next-to-last message, but when you said, "Please do not put your eyesight at risk," it appeared to me that you were asserting something that I did not think was true to try to punctuate your previous complaints expressed on this forum and that such assertions might cause undue anxiety to another.

My motives were out of compassion as well, though I realize that compassion was not directed at your message and expressed dissent from your opinion.

I don't know if there are any ophthalmologists on this forum who can give out better information than either of us know.  Maybe my opinion is all wet.

I hope you can find peace both in your health and your decisions to play on this site or not...or to participate in this forum or not.  Sorry we got off on the wrong foot.
The new ads drive me crazy too! I re-size the browser window to just the size of the play area.  Hope this works for you and the other 80,000 "members" who hate this crap.
Did they mention this doesn't happen to GOLD members? If you want it free, learn tolerance.
