If I am not mistaken, active means either visiting/posting. One further observation, the old system automatically said what was the last post regardless of forum. It would be nice if that was reinstated.

If you go to "Quick Links" in the top left, you can view "active topics" which will sort by most recent. Also handy there is "unread posts." You can set all posts as read, then when you return to the forum see just the posts that you have not read since your previous visit.
