What We've Become

Given the lack of foreign travelers coming to Vegas, and the woeful lack of conventions, Vegas is now a hub city for "local" gambling. Californians and Arizonians are coming here in droves.
Unfortunately for us, they don't care about spending money like the "normal" tourists/conventioneers. Proof is in the long queues at fast food places on the Strip, as well as the obscene amount of food garbage strewn all about the sidewalks, streets, and parking garages. I've never seen this city so absolutely filthy until now.
Recent shutdowns: Wicked Spoon buffet at Cosmo closing down (again) next week; Mirage (the entire property, including casino), closed Monday noon through Thursday; New York, New York shutting down restaurants by 7 pm.; many Strip hotels closed midweek.
Hotel rooms were at $9 a night at Harrahs and Ballys, in December. Add in the resort fee nightly, it's still a draw for those pesky Californians who like to sleep four or more to a room and smoke weed. Hurray!

I imagine it's tough times right now. I would also expect a HUGE comeback sometime this year.

I for one am itching to get back. People are waiting to get out of this lockdown garbage and Vegas will be the perfect release.

I don't know if it will make up for the huge losses. But I'm certain there are some very good times ahead for Vegas. Hopefully there aren't too many permanent closures in the meantime. In an economy so dependent on tourism, Vegas has to be one of the hardest hit.

True.
We have the second highest unemployment rate in the nation, only outdone by Hawaii. Vegas, being the "ninth island", well, I guess Hawaii ranks one and two for unemployment.
We have a virus positivity rate of a bit over 20%.
There's no definitive data on how many restaurants will be permanently out of business before this new year is over.
Some of my favorite things about Vegas, such as the Vegas Golden Knights and the Smith Center, are surely forever changed and will look different when we "reopen."

I don't envision any comeback for us this year. Maybe 2022 . . .

A long way from Elvis crooning the section's title song! It will be back next year in some zombie state.

I was not at all aware that places like Mirage literally shut down for four days a week and then just reopen Friday thru Sunday? Wow that must really be tough.

The whole management and dealing with the covid-19 pandemic was a dysfunctional mess from the start, and continues to be. The pain of all the death and illness will be worsened (but not exceeded) by the economic pain. Nothing replaces lost friends and family.
