Can’t argue that point.

Yes this observation is true Mr. triplextriple, although even with Gasoline, you can make serious adjustments in your life style and routine, to use far less than you currently do now, and if enough people all over the country and world did so, it would force the Gas suppliers to adjust their business models and pricing etc. I recommend a documentary that is on free streaming services, it's called "GAS Hole" and it is a very candid and honest look at the Oil & Gas industry.TripleTriple wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2024 10:28 amNearly everyone needs gasoline. Nearly no one needs Vegas.
Comparing gasoline to gambling really isn't the key here though, in terms of compelling the business owners and executives into making changes that are more fair and reasonable for all of us customers. The Key is the fact that both Gasoline/Oil companies like Mobil, Exxon, SHell, and others are publicly traded companies, and likewise nearly all major Casino Resort corporations are now publicly traded business entities. This fact means they are greatly influenced by and dependent upon public opinion and sentiment, as they are beholden to the shareholders and cannot allow a huge tanking of the stock price and the business revenue streams. If the public stopped those revenue streams even briefly, and if the public adopted a very bad negative view of these businesses, they would have to react and respond to alleviate the situation.

Apparently the doc alleges that the oil companies (aided by bought politicians) conspired to extinguish a miracle technology -- which I find dubious in light of accumulating evidence that alternatives need government subsidies to survive in the marketplace. If the public stopped those revenue streams even briefly, and if the public adopted a very bad negative view of these businesses, they would have to react and respond to alleviate the situation.
The oil industry has often been volatile because supply responses occur with a lag. It takes years to permit a new well, and shutdowns of existing wells are very costly. The companies swing between (1) strong profitability, and (2) circling the drain. But malcontent consumers only notice circumstance #1.
I don't know the numbers, but I think energy has suffered some of the highest bankruptcy rates of any sector. Below you can see the collapse of its representation within the stock market:
The "very bad negative view of these businesses" already exists afaik. Simply holding stock in an oil company is controversial now:

Everyone should be free to boycott, but such actions will not solve an imaginary problem. When the boycotts fail, the next step will be government price controls. And then communism:
Note the date. It's probably 90% consensus now, considering the direction Canada has gone politically.
Back to the resort fee topic, which is a very emotional issue for some people. I readily admit the pricing structure is nonsensical because customers are essentially charged something for nothing. But what's the harm? The total is the same. I can either pay $100 base + 50 resort fee, or $150 base. Even if you win the protest, you accomplish nothing.

Just to remind folks, that if your player’s card level is high, that particular resort will wave any Resort Fees.
I’m a Gold member with MGM’s Player’s club. When I check in I remind them I’m Gold, and they’ll wave the resort fees for my stay. At MGM, If you’re Gold, Platinum, or Noir, they’re waived.
This works particularly well for comped rooms.

I was in Vegas September 4 thru 11, stayed at Golden Nugget. Total sh*tshow in terms of gaming...video poker, with these server based systems is not the same as it was when I used to play there years ago. I have heard other people talk about this too. Games used to each have their own little chip and computer. Now every outlet feeds into one huge server somewhere. It's not hard to imagine what a casino can now do that they were not able to do before. And because I basically lost right from the get go, I could not and did not hit anything, I was not able to get my total play up high enough to get some suit to waive or remove the resort charges so I got hosed there too. I'm not just going to gamble more and lose more so I don't have to pay some BS resort fees. That shoots the argument made above about how we pay ultimately no matter what. This is and always will be about greed greed greed greed. And screw this communism specter, anytime anyone starts complaining about the unfair BS of capitalism, some simpleton always has to break out the specter of communism to try and justify the badness and unfairness of capitalism. communism actually will work if everyone actually agrees to make it work, but that never happens because people inherently are flawed, so any government system is not going to work as intended. Dictatorships will work just fine if the dictator is a benevolent, wise and fair ruler...it will seem like a great system.
A signifcant number of illegal aliens in the US are actually from countries where the person arrived on a tourist visa (a place such as in Vegas, or Hollywood) and they just simply never leave, they just blend into this melting pot we call society. It happens elsewhere too, such as DIsney world, people arrive flying in on a tourist visas from where ever and they simply never return home. SO much for building a friggin wall. To say nothing of where I cross to the north , how do you secure the whole northern canadian border? it's very easy to sail across the Great Lakes and arrive in Michigan; or how do you secure the coastlines? Trust me if someone is motivated to get in to the USA or even Canada, you won't be able to stop them.
