Horrible HORRIBLE scene from the Vegas Strip

Post by DaBurglar »

Has Anyone else been following the awful events that transpired on the Vegas Strip in front of PARIS and that portion of the Strip last night?    A woman with a 3 year old in the back seat deliberately drove up onto the sidewalk SEVERAL TIMES and plowed down a whole bunch of people in several different piles.....so far 1 is dead, 2 or 3 cling to life and dozens more are injured to various degrees.....The ramifications of this have only just begun to reverberate.    The strip last night looked like an absolute chaotic mess, as you can imagine, all the various ambulances and rescue vehicles trying to negotiate in and around all the crowds and buildings and stuff......one of the first things it exposed was just how vulnerable Vegas is to mass scale tragedies, and the local hospitals were quickly overwhelmed with the influx of victims, combined with the "NORMAL" influx of sick people (drunken revelers, heart attacks, asthma attacks, accidents, etc etc)Almost immediately, the authorities announced this was NOT an act of terrorism, although anyone could see that all people in the vicinity were in fact "terrorized" by the events they just witnessed or experienced!    What they should have said was this was not terrorism meant to support or further the agenda (whatever it is) of middle eastern groups like ISIS or AL Qaeda......how they actually made the determination it was not terrorism is beyond me, but it seemed unlikely.    [THE FOLLOWING IS ONLY MY OPINION FORMULATED THIS VERY MINUTE BASED ON THE INFO I NOW HAVE.....it could, and will, change as more is learned, but again, this is only MY PERSONAL OPINION]     I myself figured it was more likely a case of some frustrated-yet-selfish woman with a child who was frustrated by her life's path that lead her to Vegas, who was clearly in financial distress (the car she was in supposedly was a 1996 piece of junk), who either was on prescribed drugs like Anti-depressants or some drug like Methamphetamine (a popular choice with young women especially in places like VEGAS), and she just lost it....and decided to make dozens of innocent people suffer like she is suffering.     Stupid, mindless, senseless, horrible, awful......ugh, there are literally no adequate words to sum this up. [<end opinion>]You can bet there will now be an endless discussion on just how vulnerable Vegas (and many other cities and locations) is to a whole slew of scenarios involving violence, whether motivated by a terrorist agenda or just plain malice and spite.    I am sure I am not the only one who has pondered the thought that Vegas and all its various MASSIVE hotels and casinos and surrounding sights is particularly vulnerable to the elements in society and the world who want to perpetrate such heinous acts, whatever the cause or motivation.    Vegas is dependent upon easy access and the ability of visitors/tourists to come & go as they please without any type of hindrance or difficulty.    Such acts as this tragedy on the Strip represent a fundamental and existential threat to what Vegas does......What does everyone else think?

DaBurglar do you think that Las Vegas is the only place in the United States that is vulnerable to a "mass scale" tragedy?

How do you know the driver was on drugs? Why are you saying that the driver was in "financial distress?" Please remember that Warren Buffet drives a car that is at least 10 years old.

Back to vulnerability, add: outdoor shopping malls; sports arenas (and not only professional sports either); New York Times Square;l Chicago's Mag Mile; any populated roadway; parades; the list, can go on.

Are you an advocate for fear mongering? Should the public live in fear of getting struck by anout of control vehicle anywhere they go? Geez...

Closer to DB's neck of the woods: Boston Marathon. I agree with the point that I am overall pleased that my life's path did not lead to LV. VP and craps tables are two hours away, which is sufficiently convenient.

It is very sad anytime and anywhere it happens. It reminds us to be more weary of loved ones if a change in behavior is noticed. Unfortunately with the case of this and the San Berndandino tragedy, there was no obvious signs for what it will lead up to next with those perpetrators.

I read the background story of the perpetrator. No one could have easily figured out that one of her photos on her Facebook album had the picture of Paris on the Las Vegas taken three years ago, the very scene she drove the vehicle onto the sidewalks. Very errie, I did feel more comfortable walking on the strip with all these connecting bridges being built so that people can avoid waiting for the Walk sign.

No, and I never implied or said such a thing.....this is yet one more pointless idiotic comment you toss around in response to one of my posts.    MY POINT is that VEGAS, and in particular the Vegas STRIP is exceptionally vulnerable to this particular type of violence and threat due to the very nature of what the "vegas strip experience" is all about, CROWDS AND CROWDS of pedestrians meandering and walking to and fro, back and forth, all day and all night....during the summer months these large crowds become HUGE at times......ERGO, Vegas is more vulnerable than most american cities
How do you know the driver was on drugs? Why are you saying that the driver was in "financial distress?" Please remember that Warren Buffet drives a car that is at least 10 years old.I do not know she was on drugs, and I said so, I clearly said this is only my opinion, a "THEORY" (trying to explain or understand WHY.....WHY this woman would do what she did)  based on the initial info and scene and that it should be regarded as such....again you are tripping over yourself just to get in some pointless criticism.   And your point comparing Warren Buffet's ten year old car to this disturbed woman's 19 year old car is just plain stupid.....anyone with half a brain and common sense could intuitively understand my point (and again I was simply stating a "THEORY");  Warren Buffet chooses to squeeze the maximum usage out of his car by taking care of it and keeping well serviced and clean etc......I highly doubt this woman is driving a 19 year old piece of junk because she wants to and its part of some grand plan she has to save money!  (*note*  since the time of my initial post, it has come to light that the woman who committed this crime, is indeed in financial difficulty due in part to the father of her child not staying in touch and doing what he is supposed to do, and that the woman was actually LIVING out of her 19 year old car in the weeks prior to this incident, so there!)

Geez...None of this makes any sense...... simply talking about or reporting events AFTER THE FACT is not fear mongering, its called reflection, analysis, venting, and a whole slew of other terms.   Obviously anything, anyplace, anywhere can be the scene of something awful.    NO the public should not live in fear, and yet FEAR is what certain politicians, who tend to be on the RIGHT (conservative), seize upon and utilize to justify and put forth absurd or extreme ideas like "We need to BAN all muslims from entering this country"  or "We need to bomb Iraq and Syria where ISIS lives until the sand glows...", just to name a couple (there are dozens of examples.)     THAT's fear mongering......

DaBurglar why do you refer to my post as idiotic? Why even post something like this topic here? Don't you think everyone, or most everyone, was aware of this incident already? For you to post in the manner you did could COULD give people the impression that Las Vegas is not safe. THAT is fear mongering. Yoou didn't analyze a thing in your post, it was as you said, much clsoer to venting. But venting about what? Do you want to see The Strip lined with bollards? Do you want vehicular traffic banned from The Strip? Do you want a hugely increased police presence? Be aware that these examples all come with a price.

Who, besides you HERE, questioned the safety of Las Vegas? NOBODY.

You really think you're something special, don't you?
