Getting More Out Of A Vegas Trip

Post by case »

This being a VP forum we obviously talk about video poker and our results. However by being a player it opens you up to many offers that are extras at no cost.

My wife and I will be in Vegas for a week in September. During that week we will have been invited to a "cash" grab at Sams Town. This is by invite and you get to choose a hat and whatever the prize says you win that amount, up to 1,000 dollars. Everyone wins something. The offer also includes an ice cream social and three free nights.

Then we are off to the Orleans for a free slot tournament that also includes three nights. First place is 8,000 dollars and they pay down to 100th place. Only 200 invited so with two of us playing our odds increase.

Next we go to Gold Coast for a video poker tournament with a 3,000 first place prize plus free rooms. I won one of these a couple years ago at Sams Town for a 5,000 prize. (I wrote about it on this site).

These are all Boyd properties this trip. We have way more food comps than we can possibly ever use from previous stays.

In October there is a 75,000 video poker tournament at the Rio that we have an invite to plus rooms.

I would guess we are in Vegas 60-70 days a year and I can not remember the last time we paid for a room and we have never paid a resort fee. We are not big bettors but we do play a lot of hours when we go.

We get flights really cheap as we are able to take advantage when they send us flights at a discount often 75% off. Of course it is with an airline that many don't like (Spirit) but after 100 flights we have had very few problems. A few delayed flights but always got there the same day.

These are just some of the perks we get every month that are often over looked by many but they all count towards the bottom line. Anyone who gives a casino loyalty will get these offers. At the end of a year we often have a few thousand dollars made through these offers and also they are fun.

Just another way to look at gambling in Vegas.

Hi case - I would say that you've got a pretty full schedule of events for your upcoming trip and good luck to both you, and your wife. The slot tournament at The Orleans is a no-brainer and the video poker tournaments put on at the Rio are always fun too. I participated in one about 10 years ago there and I ended up in 51st place. Not too terribly bad considering I had a totally lousy first day score. I too; was invited to the one they are having in October but I can't make it.

Spirit Airlines has their faults (which airline doesn't though) but once you figure out how to work Spirit Airlines then you have no problems.

Again, best of luck to you and your wife and I hope you have a blast. Oh and make a few bucks too.

Does spending so much time in Vegas keep you from playing inferior pay tables locally?

We have good pay tables here in Mid Michigan as you know Case!

Nice comps and tourneys to play should be a great time in sin city! Good Luck!

Congrats @case . Love the positive attitude you bring! When you mention Spirit airlines, is this part of the comp package? Or, do you pay for those? Thanks.

Hi Jojo. We pay for our fights but if you are on Spirits email list they send all kinds of special deals on flights. Just today they sent me an 85% off. However it has to be booked today. I am retired so I can take advantage of these deals and I use these deals all the time. Todays deal will fly me direct from Detroit to Vegas and return Vegas to Detroit direct as well. The cost would be 130 dollars return plus luggage if you have any.

I will be there April 20-27 on a deal I booked for under 200. Again I am in a couple tournaments and free rooms. Life is good!

As gamblers, we get used to the perks, and take them for granted. I just stayed two nights in Bisbee in a room that was maybe 12 by 15, $121 a night plus taxes and fees. $288 for the stay. $59 for a Motel 6 on the way there and $105 to stay in a vintage trailer in Carefree on the way back. First time in a while I paid for rooms anywhere.
By the way, the Carefree Highway is one of the most beautiful roads I've had the pleasure to drive. If you are ever driving from Vegas to Phoenix, or vice versa, it's a little out of the way distance wise but can save substantial time during commuting hour. It's little wonder it inspired the song of the same name.

I have relatives in Phoenix and know Carefree Highway well. Rt 74 if I remember. Bill, did the state of Arizona ever widen Rt 93 up to I-40 or is it still one lane in each direction?
