Last time I was in AC gambling wasn't legal! It wasn't a great experience, although the boardwalk was interesting.

Awesome article......I only wish they had this same perspective and motivation 6 years ago, circa 2009, when they actually could have SAVED at least 2, maybe 3 of the four casinos that disappeared last year (Revel was never feasible, given its original layout, size, scope and cost...) AC Club should have survived, and would now be poised to piggyback on Tropicana's momentum....The Trump Plaza should also have never shuttered, given its primo (actually SUPER PRIMO) location.....and Showboat was still pulling in money on the plus side, but was doomed by the incompetence rife within CET, nothing to do with the Atlantic city situation really......I am pulling for AC......as I said many times before, the reason I was so zealous in my reporting on the perceived problems and downside in AC was my earnest desire to see the place thrive....it's potential, and latent beauty are obvious, and it can be far more enjoyable (especially in terms of RELAXATION) than LAs Vegas when it is functioning properly and people are doing their job correctly.

Crisis concentrates the mind. It finally reached a salient flash point for the powers that be. They had to see the whole thing go down the tubes before mobilizing.

THANK YOU for posting this article. it is the most comprehensive piece i have seen on the demise of AC. it points out that the casinos were fat and happy and felt they were invinceable. this proved to be a big mistake. but, more importantly, more than any other piece i have read, it shows how government involvement, intervention and interference were huge contributors to the problem. over taxation that resulted in 'bloated' government size/employment/regulation/benefits, along with diversion of funds, that were designed to improve the health of the city, along with intervening in a private project, to keep in alive/fail, all added to AC's problems. the government interferred in the natural order of business success or failure. they tried to pick winners and losers. the money that was diverted, likely went to some other cause, to buy votes. in the end, everybody lost, except the politicans. i keep warning folks about believing/trusting government too much. they are not the enemy, but they are not always your friend. give them too much money, too much power, ask them to do more and you will likely regret it in the end.

GGB magazine has some good articles in it. One of the main reason Steve Wynn left AC when he had the Golden Nugget on the Boardwalk ( formerly the Hilton / AC CLUB ). Was of to many regulations and government involvement. The one part of the article I have to question is. When it said " when I have to pay a Local 54 worker $20 to clean a room" I " REALLY " don't think those chambermaids make $20 per hr. or per room. I might cost them $20 per room, considering all aspects of the room ( linens, toiletries, etc. ). The next time I'm going to AC. I'll ask someone how much they make. All the years I was going to AC and watching this ( mismanagement ) happen. I said this town looks like crap. The other shore points along the Jersey coast are " VERY " clean.

the reason i liked the article so much was because for years, i have been asking the same question, where did all the money go? some have posted that the casinos were just greedy and pocketed it. i am no big fan of casinos, but they are all not that stupid. they had to know that reinvesting in AC was a smart move, as that is what vegas has always done. the article points out that much of the money went to a variety of government agencies, that either 'bloated' their workforce or diverted re-developement funds elsewhere. although some will try, it is pretty hard to blame the casino owners for not fixing up the blighted areas, when they were contributing to a fund, that was supposed to do that very function. in regards to steve wynn and your belief he left due to over regulation, it is hard to argue with the guy, when it comes to the gaming business.
