Coming to AC. Thoughts?

I'm in. Take Mike Francesa's Friday NFL picks and run to the sports book. His winning percentage the last 10 years is around 60-65 %.

Exactly. Can't wait for the NFL, except it means the end of summer. I don't even have to go to AC. There will be a Sports Book at Monmouth Park about 15 minutes from my home or office.

Mike Francesa made his name by going 10 for 10 on bowl games back when he was a part time sportscaster on the old Imus in the Morning show. Imus laughingly said he'd buy him a Porsche if he got all ten. He reneged and to quash the beef between the two, the station gave Francesa a couple of shifts on the radio .

Yep. When Francesa predicted that Seton Hall would win the 1989 NCAA tournament, Imus again promised him a Porcshe or something similar. A bad call at the end of the final against Michigan saved him.

Back in 2011 when I first joined this forum, AC was desperately trying to staunch the bleeding, and Governor Chrispie Chream was giving the CRDA (Casino Redevelopment Authority) lots of latitude and encouragement to "revitalize" AC.....at that time, sports betting was one of the things he was trying to get AC to be able to adopt and was pushing to have the court authorize it;  ultimately he was unable to do so and instead opened the Revel, and we all know how that turned out.    And now, 7 years later, when it looks like AC has already turned a corner, sports betting finally is allowed......HOWEVER.....What is being allowed TODAY is different from what was originally pushed for in 2011 (and before 2011 as well, since sports betting had come up often in the past for AC).....prior to 2011 it was only AC that was the primary intended target for sports betting, whereas today it is EVERYONE and EVERYWHERE!    This means that whatever benefit AC might derive from sports betting will be greatly diluted by the fact that numerous other outlets, as well as any STATE that wants it, can offer sports betting.    This means that anyone going to AC to bet on sports probably was going to AC anyway.....it will mean additional revenue for AC, at least for a little while, but not the windfall they originally envisioned.

DB, That is probably true about AC, William Hill has invested 2 million dollars in setting up a sports book at Monmouth Park, always assuming that one day sports betting in NJ would be legal. It is 15 minutes from my house or office, so no need for me to go to AC to place a bet.

Legalized sports betting will not be a windfall for many states who enact some version of it moving forward. Taxes and fees that will be added in will reduce the house take and this would be made up by adjusting the odds or the spread. For example; Illinois is only forecast to add $100 million a year to their state coffers, a mere pittance compared to the billions of dollars in debt the state is carrying.

Nor will it be quick to get up and running as few states have laws and regulations in place and ready to go.

Bookies will still be around after legalized sports betting is up and running.

Agreed Ted. It will be interesting to see how each state deals with this. Monmouth Park says they will be up and running Memorial Day weekend because they planned for this. I am interested to see if other racing venues and OTB parlors will get on board and if the state lets them.
