It seems to me there is no really good solution to the current situation, which is something that most people in society have a hard time accepting. The governor in this case seems to be trying to find some sort of compromise to accomodate as many viewpoints as possible, no?
Namely, sometimes things happen for which there is no ideal solution or action, that there will be pain and suffering and inconvenience no matter what you do; all you can do is try to minimize the bad or downside and wait for the situation to pass or resolve itself. With this whole Covide19 pandemic, that has been the problem in the USA from day 1, the powers that be have tried to always take the easy way out; if the USA had simply bitten the bullet early on like so many other countries (Germany for example) they would have ramped up testing as their first sole priority, mobilize every single medical resource possible, and just told the american public that for the next 30-60 days you are just going to have to accept that this is reality, that you cannot go about your business like normal, and then at the end of 60 days or whatever it takes, we will evaluate and see where we are at and go from there.... nobody did that, nobody said that, it was just a chaotic hodgepodge of points and counterpoints, people shouting above each other, etc. The capacity of american citizens to put up with inconvenience and pain is pitiful.
This is NOT "any other country". American citizens have the protection of our Constitution.
No one can mandate masks or social distancing or any other sensible measure to "flatten the curve".
Personally i believe in adhering to these measures,as best i can and wished that everyone would do the same. But you cannot legislate against stupidity. No one is being arrested for violations or locked in their homes to enforce quarantines.
Why? Because courts would not and could not uphold any charges or support any laws passed to do so.
Think of it in this light. What we have here is one of the downsides of our cherished Freedom.
Now one final comment, that will fall on deaf ears for some in this forum, but one thing to consider is that this is the challenge that President Trump or President Anybody faced in dealing with this crisis which has truly been a trip into the unknown.
As stated above "sometimes things happen for which there is no ideal action or solution that there will be pain and suffering and inconvenience no matter what you do" (well stated AC).
President Trump has done as well in dealing with this as could be expected.
Trying to tell the American public otherwise is pure low level politics to try to save a failing candidate and people will not forget that in November.
As I said this is a decent well written post, some of which I readily agree with, some of it I do not.
it's true the USA is different than other places and the US constitution is unique. But this pandemic is itself unique. The Constitution is about guaranteeing LIFE LIBERTY and PURSUIT of Happiness. Obviously if you are dead, none of this applies. When the USA is under direct threat from someone or something, the government can and does do things that it normally could not or would not do. That is reality, that is necessity, for the sake of welfare and survival. it is a slippery slope obviously and can result in abuses, mistakes and all kinds of unforeseen and undesirable side effects. But here is the reality: The Covid19 Virus, much like a foreign enemy invader, is a direct threat to the well being and security of US citizens; this fact cannot be doubted. So either the president or congress or even local executive authority like State Governors can and should, in this specific instance and case, be able to mandate and implement requirements that are for the protection and preservation of all citizens.
During world wars one and Two, the US government did things which are now known to be kinda UN-AMERICAN and Unethical, such as the infamous locking up of US citizens of Japanese ancestry in concentration camps during the first year of World War Two. At the time though, it really did seem like a legitimate action to take. SO now here the USA is in 2020 fighting a virus that is known to spread via certain specific methods. It seems advisable to have the Government Authority mandate the measures that are known to help limit the spread. I don't think this is wrong or even exceeds the constitutional mandate to protect the Citizenry from harm. You just need to be careful this is as far as it goes.
I agree with your point you cannot legislate against stupidity, and I agree with your point this is all new unknown ground and challenges. There is no law against people being total idiots and acting in their own worst interests or harming themselves! But harming other people is a different story and that's another aspect of this situation and the American Free society; there must be some way to protect the rights of you and I not to be infected with covid-19 by people who refuse to wear a mask, don't you think?
As far as the job Trump has done, lets just say we need to agree to disagree on that front; I agree he has a tough assignment, as would whoever is in the position when stuff like this goes down.
