What a Catch-22

Post by billryan »

A friend has a job that included overseeing student transportation. In 2019, his district had about 30 full-time drivers and a couple of dozen part-time. Schools start in two weeks and as of now, they have 15 and five. Most of the drivers were retirees and most don't want to come back under the present circumstances. The school has spent some serious money recruiting new drivers but they need to be
certified by the state DMV, which is still in lockdown and making appointments some three months out.
Another problem is the former regular drivers all lost their health insurance because they didn't put in enough hours last year and their contract sets wages based on hours worked so they need to work 90 days before it kicks in.

If the drivers are all vaccinated and they wear masks and if the students riding the buses are wearing masks, there should not be a health risk for the drivers.

Right, because vaccinated people don't get Covid, right? Or take it home to their families.

By the way, it isn't being widely reported but several private insurers are no longer covering your covid cost if you have not been vaccinated.

Which private insurers?

Unvaccinated people are much more likely to contract COVID and many times more likely to have a bad outcome than vaccinated people. A vaccinated person wearing a mask and maintaining a reasonable social distance is highly unlikely to contract COVID and, even if he/she does, it will be a 97% chance of either no symptoms or slight symptoms. There is no intelligent substitution for vaccination.
