Sad news indeed. He should be in the HOF. Gambling addict. I have not seen any reports that he bet against his own team nor that he ever made any plays/decisions in support of his gambling.

Ditto. Always looked forward to him coming up to bat. My Great Grandfather from Southern Virginia was a huge fan of the Big Red Machine. Sometimes we would listen to the games together on his old 1930s stand up floor radio since in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia, the games didn’t always come in on the TV. Somewhere in the family photos, I’m sure there is a picture of us with our ears close to the radio trying to hear the game in between the static!! Photo I think is from 1970.

I’m sorry Rose has passed, but I’ll dissent that he should ever be inducted into the Hall of Fame. He knowingly and blatantly violated one of the most prominent baseball rules - Major League Rule 21, “Any player, umpire or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible (emphasis added).” He didn’t claim addiction, he didn’t seek treatment, he didn’t apologize, he didn’t accept responsibility and, in fact, lied and denied it for 15 years. Throw in tax evasion and another serious criminal allegation. Actions have consequences and integrity matters in life, and, importantly in sports with the proliferation of sports betting.

Did the man not serve enough of a sentence to suit you?
HE DID APOLOGIZE and admitted to betting on baseball. If they based entry into a professional sports hall of fame on character of a player, those hallowed halls would be more than half empty.
For the last several years when he was signing autographs, do you know what he wrote?
"Sorry I bet on baseball"

Unless there's some kind of financial benefit to be in the HoF, then I wouldn't even care if I were him. He was famous and did his job.
