Prayers for all of the Lake Charles/SE Texas

Post by Lucky Larry »

I know this isn't a VP story but our prayers need to go to all the Lake Charles, La, and South East Texas folks who are under threat from Laura. We have many friends in the Lake Charles area and the potential 9 foot storm surge in the Lake Charles area will destroy hundreds of home and upend thousands of lives. It is so sad to watch the Weather Channel metrologist film from the Golden Nugget LC beach and boardwalk. If the casino's flood which they did in Rita with less storm surge, thousands of jobs will be lost along with peoples homes. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers!!

Winds up to 150 MPH. Does not look good for those in the path. I hope most have evacuated.

I've got a bad feeling about this one. I think a lot of people will avoid shelters because of the CoVid.

Hope your friends got out of LC in time. This storm is going to be catastrophic for the Lake Charles area. And for everyone that lives along the La / Tex border.

Like many around here I watched the Weather Channel crews from Golden Nugget and Lau'berge du lac which are next door to each other on the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles last night. Thankfully, the storm eye was east of Calcasieu River so that the huge storm surge was driven back down stream into the swamp area east of Cameron. For those who don't know, the intracoastal canal build during WWII from Florida to Texas to ship goods out of reach of German submarines is generally a mile or more inshore from the Gulf itself. Much of the gulf coast has huge areas of salt water marshes. Many of these marshes are 10-20-30 miles wide from the Gulf of Mexico to the Intracoastal Canal These salt marshes are our biggest protectors during hurricane. That's part of the reason the New Orleans area floods so much, 10's of miles of salt water marshland has been destroyed south of NOLA.

The picture of the Isle of Capri PaddleWheel casino wedged under the I-10 bridge is disturbing. That bridge is one of the most dangerous in the US and the casino boat will only create more stress on the old steel.

I've talked to several of our friends and they''ve weathered the storm and now face downed trees and loss of lights and water. Thankfully, none that I've talked to were hurt. Hopefully, FEMA will respond quickly to assist the thousands of families who lost shelter. The Texas and La. communities will rally to their aide until FEMA comes. Please continue your prayers as they face a long recovery. Hopefully, La will do a better job than Texas who still owes people in East Texas hurricane funds from 5 years ago. In particular, the State of Texas refuses to give out hurricane money to families who can't prove a legal title in the families' name since the family may have passed it down from generation to generation without filing legal title showing purchase or a filled will. So sad!
