Winning Casinos vs. Losing Casinos

Post by FloridaPhil »

We are told legal video poker is random and their is no difference in the RNG's results from one casino to the other. Other than issues external to the processor, I have never seen a video poker machine that I suspected had a "rigged" RNG. If there are any, I doubt I would know as random can do lots of weird and incredible things.

I have played video poker all over this country. I have played at casinos where I can't win no matter what I do and others that seem to hand out money. At one time there was a forum member who complained about an excess of "dud" hands in AC. I suppose he meant hands that don't pay anything. I once had the unfortunate experience of going almost two days without a quad. I was playing at the dollar level at the time and it was painful. Funny thing was, this same casino was where I had my biggest daily win a few months earlier.

There is a small casino on the border of Georgia and N. Carolina at Murphy. It's not much to look at and the odds aren't anything to write home about. I know it sounds crazy, but I can't seem to lose there. Royals materialize on a regular basis. On my last visit in the fall, a guy was playing next to me and my wife. He was playing 8/5 DDB and hitting a lot of quads. He was thrilled and continued to play as his buddies watched. I suspected something good was about to happen. When he hit 4 aces with a kicker, we all clapped. He cashed out and went to another machine. I looked at my wife and we both knew what was next. I moved to his machine and hit a royal flush within five minutes.

Two times last year at Murphy, I played deuces wild all day. I normally play quarters. Both times, when we were about to leave, I switched and played what was left in the machine at max coin dollars. Both times I hit a quad deuce for $1,000.

I have never done well at the Peppermill in Reno even though they have some of the best games I have ever played. Everything that happens to me in a casino is pure luck, some good and some bad. Some years the good makes me a winner. Some years the bad takes it back. That's video poker.

Good point FP.
The first ten years after i switched from 21 to VP i was up down and very close to even.
In 2016 I hit two 20K Royals and two 8K's to end the year up 53K.
In 2017-2019 i gave 2/3 of that back.
Also Royalless since Sept. with apx. 250,000 hands.
Borrowing your words,"That's video poker".

Now someone might think that is a very short quote to be FP's words but it's true, look it up. :)

Video poker is a game where your short term results are determined by the frequency of a few rare hands. It may take many thousands of hands to feel the negative effect of poor odds or player errors. I have played single coin quarters all day, only to hit a dollar or five dollar jackpot and make two months worth of profit in one hand.

There is no way to turn a negative video poker game positive, of that I am sure. If you play the same 96% video poker game the same way, you can accurately predict what will happen in time. The slow drip drip of the 4% house edge will eventually drain your bankroll. When I play small, the drips are smaller. When I play less hands, the drips are fewer. My personal strategy is to play 95% of my hands as small as possible and 5% of my hands as big as I dare. If I get lucky on that 5%, I don't give it back.

Staying home is not an option for me. I enjoy my time at the casino. It doesn't bother me to play single coin quarters because I know I am saving money when I do. My excitement comes when I play that 5%.

Yes! That is Tropicana AC for me. Great comps, ironically. Not much value after the expected bust.
A less boring but still tolerable strategy is SSSSL, going with a large bet 20% of the time. Desperately seeking that perfect ratio to the recipe where I can get a jolt from playing and not really risk a bust.

Busting is part of the game. No matter how much money I do or don't wager, it happens all too frequently. If I take $100 into the casino and lose it, I get over it by the time I get home. If I lose $1,000 or more, it haunts me for a long time. Taking a $20-$30 shot at the end of the day is fairly benign. If you keep what you win and walk out, it's better than letting that 4% house edge turn into an ass whipping. :x

I have been posting on this forum for eight years. So far, I have made 5,854 posts. There is a 100% chance I will post some of them again. I post whatever I'm thinking about at the time. My friends and I were discussing the Murphy casino just the other day. Someone here may wish to drop by some day. If you are going to spend your day scouring my posts looking for repeats, you will be a busy boy. Why don't you just sit back and enjoy the forum for what it is, conversation?

I certainly hope so. I worked over 50 years so I can do nothing if I wish to. Unlike other old men my age, I don't holler at kids on my lawn or waste my time bitching because my calendar doesn't read 1955. I'm a live and let live sort of guy. If I don't like what someone says, I've learned it's better not to listen or respond.

What got me suspended was not repeating casino reviews. Do you want to read about other members experiences or just yours?
