Las Vegas: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Post by DougJ »

Some casinos here in Vegas have been open since June 4th, but others are reopening in the next few weeks. (such as Luxor and Mandalay Bay, due to open around July 1).

Since the reopening, we've noticed that casinos are loosely following their own written guidelines regarding health/safety of employees and guests. My guesstimate is that less than 50% of guests are wearing masks. Those gamblers who smoke generally don't care to be inconvenienced with a mask. Although masks were strongly encouraged, not every casino provides them up front at entrances.
Social distancing has been a huge joke, IMO. At one casino, every single machine was turned on, but chairs were removed. Of course, people just rearranged chairs and so we are sitting shoulder to shoulder.
Security guards will walk past, and say nothing. At the craps table, which supposedly is limited to six players, there were eight players at the table. Red Rock employees said nothing.

IMO, don't expect each casino to care about your health and safety, because they don't.

Today, the Nevada Gaming Control Board tightened its rules for table games players. Whereas masks were encouraged, they were not mandatory. As of today, gamblers are REQUIRED to wear masks at all casinos table games, if there is no plexiglass barrier already there. In addition, there are supposed to be masks at casino entrances, or signage directing guests to where complimentary masks are located.

Since enforcement seems to be the issue here in Vegas, we can't wait to see who bothers to follow the rules. Many guests don't care, and employees should care, but don't. Each casino filed its health/safety plans with the GCB, but who's monitoring if those plans are being enforced?

Meanwhile, Vegas isn't very welcoming right now, due to the ongoing (even as of last night) "riots"/"protests" on the Strip itself. ON THE STRIP, blocking traffic . . . and also attempting to go up the exit ramp onto the I-15, to block the interstate.

It looks like some AZ casinos have had to close again due to safety concerns and the death of a casino security guard. https://www.abc15.com/news/region-phoen ... -ad92-6pRY

Yesterday, Las Vegas had the largest daily spike in virus infection cases; the record number of cases in Vegas comes just 2 weeks after casinos reopened.
Between the "rioters" and the lax casino enforcement, no surprise here.

We've visited exactly 3 casinos in the last 2 weeks, and that was three times too many for me.
The fact that casinos didn't ban smoking was bad enough, but then to watch the same old behaviors replayed . . . smokers with no inconvenient masks plopping down next to us (so we move), every machine turned on, so no social distancing, security guards do nothing, dirty machines everywhere, with drink spills, etc.
Nevada GCB needs to step up.

I have yet to go to any casino. While I'm not to worried about my health, but I'm not in a hurry to be around the typical disgusting cretins that hang out in casinos.

Toledo opens tomorrow and a friend mentioned going there. I doubt I'd go with him.

So the plexiglass partition protects the dealer from the players and the players from the dealer but with players NOT wearing masks the plexiglass doesn't do diddly squat to protect the players from the players.

M Casino last Sunday had 10 people at 1 craps table not counting the 3 employees, and 9 at the other not counting 3 employees and spectators. Again, no temp check at the doors and no one wiping down machines, but cocktail servers out in full force...

In Laughlin, The Riverside, Aquarius, Regency, and Edgewater - no temp checks or masks given to anyone who entered any of these. At Riverside you got 2 masks and 1 small hand sanitizer in the hotel room. Riverside had no one wiping down machines, and a good 30 minute wait in between service in the restaurants, but sit down at a machine and within 20 seconds a cocktail server will ask if you want anything... Housekeeping still doing their half assed job cleaning, and in the newly converted BBQ which used to be the buffet they couldn't properly wipe down a table to save their life. Looks like they brought back 1/2 of the D league crew instead of the A gamers who know what to do, in order to save on payroll.

I would not be surprised if Sisolak orders round 2 of total casino shutdown in the near future. Arizona is already on it...

What a shame. The exact opposite of what I have been posting about regarding Mohegan Sun.

We ate at the Wynn "buffet" this afternoon. It's no longer self-serve, you order unlimited items off their menu, and servers bring it out to your table in small portions.
Didn't gamble at all, just wanted to dine there. It was a noticeable difference at Wynn versus each of the other 3 casinos that we have visited in the last 2 weeks.

In a bank of four machines, the two middle machines were always turned off. There is plexiglass at all the table games. When we entered Wynn from their parking garage, they had thermal imaging to take your temperature; they also offered masks at the door, which were handed to us by someone wearing gloves and using tongs. More guests seemed to be wearing masks.
At the restaurant, tables were blocked off, at least six feet apart, probably more.
Wynn casino was spotlessly clean, and numerous cleaning staff visible.
I'm impressed that Wynn is taking it all seriously, and it puts places like the M Casino to shame.
