I have been playing VP for 20 years...
If you have been playing that length of time without having to endure one of those ugly "can't win for losing" streaks until now, you have been lucky, and should be grateful, rather than questioning the randomness of the machines now that you've experienced one.

I don't know about there being a conspiracy about the randomness, but I hate the new machines with a passion.

Personally, there is no room in my heart for hate. Passionate hate or not.

I have been playing VP for 20 years and do enjoy it. I play a lot in Vegas and around my hometown. During my last trip to Vegas I noticed something different with card patterns. Anyone who plays a lot of VP and plays a lot at one sitting will notice patterns. I played several sessions a day at different times from AM to PM. Very rarely was I dealt three of a kind and rarely making three of something on the draw. The existence of quads was hardly ever seen. The Programmed Randomness came to my mind when I went to one of the casinos sister properties and the same exact results occurred after playing different times and different machines. I have never witnessed every machine I played showing the same losing patterns reacting as if they were cloned. I would love to believe that the machines are producing random results and being independent of each other. However this last trip was a disaster and the only way I can describe my experience is calling it Programmed Randomness. Just passing this info along to see if this is happening to you. Tell me what you think! The casino names are not mentioned for obvious reasons.
I've noticed the same thing, when you're lucky to make a 3 of a kind let alone a quad. Then it follows you around everywhere until you play it out lol. Can last a long time too.

Even if you are granted a quad after two long hours, the trip is effectively toast anyway. I’ve scrapped AC side trips to the Mohegan Sun sister casino. Losing pattern recognition would imply recalling just about every hand. Losing in general is an easier argument.

I have posted several times before about extremely long dud streaks on the new machines. It also seems that the winning streaks are compressed to maybe 5 minutes of play if that. I try and play the old machines when I can get them. Only a few left where I play

What sucks is when you lower your bet to try to play out the bad luck, but then everything starts hitting. You switch back up, goes back to garbage. I'll never forget my dealt four threes and a kicker on the penny denom 100 hand machine when wasting the trash luck was my goal; with 10 hands highlighted measly 50 cent bet. I wanted to pull my hair out and scream. I guess that what I get for arguing with math lol. If you want to attract some insane dealt hands, switch down to low bets you'd never play. That will attract them!

I'm also leery of new machine and stick to the old battle axes. The machine I played on was at least ten years old. I cruised with fifty minutes of good luck and thought I was dreaming. I quit after the quad fearful of squandering the gains. Resorts machines are fairly old. Lately I was dying to find five good minutes on them any given trip. Flung my card away outside. My earlier quad Aces there back to back trips were of course on min bets.

I've always remembered your "ride out the bad luck" strategy, since you made a killing when you returned to VP. It must have been so satisfying to formulate and implement that when you were riding high off those triumphs. In actuality, it works until it doesn't. Maybe better to reset the machine by switching games, which I understand that activates. There's nothing worse on a trip than being caught short coining and staring at a wasted premium hand. I start out low, I get blown away with a quad or more. I come out guns blazing and get humbled into scaling down, the big hand appears. Last trip I got the right karma.
