I made my weekly trip to the Tampa Hard Rock yesterday.   The Florida Hard Rocks are both under construction.  In Hollywood they are in the process of building a hotel in the shape of a huge guitar.  The renderings look cool, we'll see how it comes out.The Tampa Hard Rock is being totally redone as well.   In the past month or so the non smoking section has been closed.  Yesterday I went to the Elite player's club to get my parking card renewed and the girl told me to check out the new non smoking casino.  I followed her directions and found they have created an entirely new casino for non smokers.   This non smoking casino is spacious with many new VP machines.  The sound system was great.  More importantly the air was clean and I could breath.  All the players seemed happy and it was definitely a more affluent and classy crowd without the smokers.  Well done!  I hope this catches on across the country.

I hope they went "against the grain" and put some decent games in there, as well. Others have pointed out, and I tend to agree, that the normal casino thought process seems to be: "If you want non smoking, you have to play crap".

I was surprised to find the VP odds in the new smoking section to be the same as in the rest of the casino.  I was thinking what you were thinking....

As noted in my initial post, we stopped playing VP locally well over a year ago due to smoke where the most attractive VP games are located. Non-smoking areas are very small and in most cases not sufficiently separated from the main casino. Since this thread went dormant, I am wondering if anyone else has either cut back on their VP play due to smoke or moved to machines with less attractive paytables/options in non-smoking areas due to health concerns.

Don't get me started. My own casino's pay table differential is dismal. Downstairs, full pay full smoke. Upstairs, clean air and lousy tables. Conclusion: down is up for me. Still sufficiently healthy. I get killed upstairs financially to boot.

I have been reading forum posts for 10 years in which non-APs have been derided for playing paytables with EVs plus comps, etc. below 100%. As noted in Olds recent post, paytables are often lower, and the choice of games sparcer in casino where smoking is allowed. That covers Vegas, Laughlin, and here in AZ. A recreational player who enjoys VP for entertainment rather than for profit often will succumb to playing in the smoking areas because of paytables/choice of games to minimize cost of their recreational activity. However, as we have learned, the cost to ones health playing in the smoking areas over the long term far exceeds the minimized expenditures or even AP "profits". What good is making a profit playing VP if you develop smoke-induced health consequences. This applies to recreational VP players.

Agreed and then some. I used to end my posts and sometimes still do with good health and luck to all. This statement is not my original.....If you have your health, you have everything. My dad God bless him is now 95 and understandably so in an assisted living facility. There are people here younger than me who need help with everything. Today was a gift. Every day is a gift as far as I am concerned.

Best of health to you and your dad. I was told years ago that the best thing you could do for your health was inherit good genes. Didn't mean it was the only thing but it rings true. However, smoking, and exposure to second hand smoke and other environmental carcinogens - 9/11 responders for example - can alter the benefit of inheriting good genes. I appreciate your continued good wishes.

One final VP-related corollary for the math folks, second hand smoke in the casino is a bigger threat to one's bankroll then an inferior paytable in the long run.
