Quads

Until recently, I was a dictated Deuces Wild player for many years.  I think Deuces is the best Recreational VP entertainment value, especially if you can find the 98.9% or higher game.  I eventually grew tired of the game and decided to switch to Bonus and DDB late last year.  Now I am faced with the question of quad frequency.Quads are mysterious to me.   When I go to the casino these days, I fear having a day without a quad.   Rarely does that happen.  Somewhere along the day I am dealt a quad or one pops up out of nowhere.   Some days they seem to happen in spurts.  Just when I think I have them figured out and increase my bet, they go away.  Then there is always the ultra rare days when 4 aces are all over the place.  Quads are soooo weird. As a Recreational player, I sometimes do things that don't have any basis in math.   I play to be entertained and will switch games and denominations on a whim.  I always use the best mathematical hand play strategy, but I like to change the game around.   Recently I had my second favorite thing happen.  After playing Bonus Poker for two hours, I switched to DDB and hit quad aces with kicker two weeks in a row.   What made this so much fun other than the $500 win?  If I had played DDB for two hours, I could easily have lost more than $500 before I hit the quad aces.   Instead, I limped along playing Bonus Poker, switched and got the full benefit of the DDB Jackpot. There is no strategy that can make things like this happen any more frequently.  It's all luck and I'm fine with that.   I love playing a game where the outcome is up for grabs.  Some people say "You can't win playing like that!" or "You can't win unless you play positive games."   or worse "Thanks for paying my bills!".  Who wants to play a game where you are predestined to lose?  What's great about video poker is anything that can happen will.    Quads happen when they want to.  Thankfully, they sometimes happen when I want them to.

You could adjust your strategy to get more quads, but it would come at the expense of something else that costs you more over time. Sticking to proper strategy and taking them 'as they come" is probably the best approach. You're right, no predicting exactly when that will happen!

You could, but if you decided to maximize the chance of a quad on every hand, you would only increase quad frequency by 12.27% over 9/6 Jacks or Better. This definitely comes with a costly strategy because you will ALWAYS hold a card in the quad maximizing strategy.

If a quad was the only paying hand and it paid 400 for 1 (half a max coin royal), Bob and I would play it though. It would have a 6.11% player advantage with the simplest strategy.

Quad only strategy

Thanks for the link.  I'm doing OK with traditional strategy.  No quad days are just something to get used to.   No quad deuce games in Deuces Wild are worse.  My wife just went though a 6 week long quad deuce drought then hit 6 of them in two days.   That's video poker...

The Royals just don't seem to come very often for me anymore, so playing DDB for the Quads is a good rush especially Aces.
