home software and casino same?

Post by Sensei Stew »

Hi! I wondered if anybody would comment on something that is puzzling my son and I. We have Bob Dancer's VPW software and noticed that when we play that software at home we seem to do much much better than in our local casino!!!  Any thoughts on why that would be? The conspiracy part of me wonders if they can tighten up a VP machine in a casino like they do the slot machines! Your comments are appreciated!

So are you saying that the casinos are a conspiracy or there is a conspiracy with Mr/ Dancer's software?

I have no knowledge or facts to support this, but since the casinos can profit from VP with weaker paytables, why would they have too also 'tighten' the machines? I would think that if they chose to do that (and since it is a software-driven machine, anything is possible), they would put better pay tables in the machines to attract more play.

I suspect the games you are playing at the casino have a "tighter" pay table. That is, the games return less for things like flushes or full houses.

Easy enough for you to check. And, if it turns out the casino has different pay tables, your program allows you to change the pay tables to match the casino.

I interpreted your comment of 'tighten' as meaning having less winning combinations available in the machine, as they do when they 'tighten' a slot machine. If you were just referring to pay tables, Shadow is right, Dancer's VPFW allows you to adjust paytables in his software to match what you see in your casino for your favorite games. To my knowledge, the VP machines in regulated casinos are random.

I think the solution lies elsewhere than what's been discussed so far.If you click on TRAINING STYLE, you'll find settings for LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY. If you click on BEGINNER, you'll get easy hands to play and your score will increase rapidly. If you click on MIXED, you'll simulate what you get in a casino. I personally click on ADVANCED because I want to play as close to perfectly as possible. I'm interesting in winning --- not just getting by. If you play in this mode, your score (in most games) will go down even if you get all the hands correct --- simply because the hands dealt aren't the highest paying hands.Your measure of success at home shouldn't be your score in credits. A much better measure is "Return %" which is found by clicking ANALYZE, and then OVERALL PLAY, and then RETURN. My personal minimum acceptable standards are to play at the 99+% level or higher over 200 or more hands played in ADVANCED MODE. If I can play at that level, I'm ready to play in the casino.Even if I do play at that level, I occasionally play the other modes as well. Different hands show up in the different modes and I want to be sure I can play them all correctly.Bob

I have been running Video Poker for Winners for a couple of years.  I had his earlier software before that.   I love the software, especially the ability to change the coin-in and denomination.  As far as I know, these programs are the only video poker training software that allows you to do that.  I play the software at least 10 hours a week and set the pay tables to mimic the tables at our local casinos.  I always run the software in mixed mode and I have to say it has significantly improved my play.  Interestingly enough, in mixed mode I find the software to be much tighter than real casino play.  The 4-of-a-kinds almost never come in groups and the Royals are much less frequent.   I appreciate this as it doesn't get my hopes up to where I expect to win all the time.

I wouldn't worry about the conspiracy, I'd check the software pay tables of the game you are practicing versus the casino. Also consider the probabilities of streaks. My wife loves Triple Double Bonus and usually does really well. Meanwhile I can't get a hit on the game - as a result I rarely play it. She plays it frequently so the probabilities of hits are increased.

A person goes into the Casino on Monday and hits 4 Aces and a Royal.  On Tuesday, he/she plays DW and hits quad deuces three times in a hour.  On Wednesday, nothing happens and he/she gives back all their winnings plus $500.  The machines are rigged...     Think how difficult that would be to orchestrate.  The casino would have to keep every player separate and track their play hand by hand.  If you think this is happening, don't use your players card and wear a disguise.    In most cases, the casino odds are against you.   Factor in that fact along with human errors and you can see why swings will and do occur.  Even seasoned pros playing 100% plus machines have bad days, or weeks or even years.

Well, I have to sort of agree with you.  I have played 116000 hands of 10/7 double bonus video poker on Mr. Dancer's software, and my payback is 102.24%, which is light years ahead of where I should be (100.17%).
