The peek card always becomes part of the final hand, unless you hold all five of the others.

See below the differences between two similar games. The first requires 7 coins per hand; the second "Super" game requires 8 coins per hand, with the extra coin giving you the option of burying or burning the first card off the deck.
The first game allows you to alter your selection of 5 cards to accommodate what WILL be the first replacement card. The second effectively confers no special status to the first card off the deck. Results are identical to simply dealing 6 cards and allowing you to choose up to 5 of them. Following is what you see on line here if you click on Game Info before selecting your game type.
1. "Peek and Play Poker adds a brand new twist not seen in any other game. The special max bet feature gives you the chance to take a peek at the next card in the deck, which can often guarantee a win or help avoid a losing hand!"
2. "Building upon the excitement of Peek and Play Poker which first gave players a look at the next draw card, Super Peek and Play adds the option to hold or burn your "peek" bonus card. When the card plays well with your hand, hold it for a guaranteed draw card on all lines. Not a helpful card? Burn it and get fresh cards on the draw for more winning opportunities."
The strategy for Peek and Play Poker is much more difficult than that for Super Peek 'n Play. For example, if you are dealt two pair in the 5-card hand and a non-matching card as the Peek Card, you will not be able to improve the hand to a full house. On the other hand, if you don't know whether to go for a straight, a flush, or a straight flush, the hole card will help you make that decision.
Dealt Four to a Royal with the 5th card completing a flush or a straight or even a straight flush? Yes, this game removes the ability to "hope" for that 1 in 47 chance at a Royal. Seeing the next card does nothing to change the odds of getting that royal. It is still 1 in 47. And you know right away instead of after the draw. With Peek and Play Poker, you just know whether or not to waste tossing an otherwise winning hand to try for it.
I understand that many people didn't (and still don't) like the original game. They see 2 pair or a 4 flush and then a hole card that cannot improve their hand and "feel" that it is rigged. What is ironic is that is exactly what happens in regular video poker except you can't see what the hole card is, so you don't know to be disappointed until AFTER the draw. Of course, another good thing about the game, which we are not concerned with in a contest like this, is that it costs one fewer coin per hand.
Good luck! I hope next week's tournament is more to your liking.

Short Summary:
Super Peek and Play allows you to "burn" or discard the Peek card.
Peek and Play (the current contest) does not.
So it is functioning correctly, you are likely more used to Super Peek and Play.

If you wanted to shorten it even more, you could have just said, "Summary:"
