Similar to betting various combinations of single numbers on the first 2 or 3 streets (1-9) on the roulette table. Or as in "completing" a number where a hit on the peripheral numbers will give you a modest win, but hitting the completed number is a win on every chip.
If your numbers hit you're golden. Unfortunately, there are a lot of other numbers out there.
By extension, VP is the same thing- way too many losing hands.
