Making Our Way In The USA

Post by case »

My wife (M) and I are on a sightseeing/gambling trip around Lake Michigan “sort of” as we won’t always be close to the lake but will almost complete the circle.

We left from beautiful Lake Muskoka in Gravenhurst Ontario August 13,2023.

The trip would take us through the vast wilderness of Northern Ontario

Lakes, tree’s and rock for the next six hours that brought us the the American border at Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. We would spend the next two nights at Kewadin Casino. Cost of the room was 120.00 per night. The casino is divided into a smoking section and a no smoking section. Decent size place with about 800 machines. Music was perfect for us with mostly 70,s and not too loud. We are not smokers but found the non smoking part just too hot so played in both casino’s. M plays video poker and slots while I play VP and keno…..I know keno WTH. Keno is my weakness and when VP tables suck I fall back to keno. At Kewadin the Vp tables at 0.25 level: DDB 9-5 and DB 9-6-4. Dollar JOB was the best at 9-6. They also had one progressive.

The highlight of the day was diner at Dream Catchers at the casino. Just 15.99 and you got: ribs (8) bbq beans, bbq corn on the cob, fries, coleslaw and the best cornbread we ever ate. Also I included peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream.

Day 1 was long with the drive, but at the border I was asked if I had anything to declare and then he said have a good time. Nice!

I am early in this trip and will try to post each day but no promises.

It sounds like it'll be quite a trip. Are you going to casino hop all the way, or will there be just the occasional casino stop? How long of a trip will it be?

Interestingly (to me, at least), we stayed at that same Kewadin casino several years ago. We were going to a wedding in Eliot Lake, and rather than simply go there via Sudbury, went to Windsor, stayed at Caesars, and then drove north through Michigan, staying in Sault Ste. Marie before proceeding to Eliot Lake.

I don't actually remember much about the place, with the exception of the fact that we played full pay pick'em, for quarters.

That rib meal you showed us looks like enough for both my wife and myself, and there likely would be leftovers, as well.

I hope the trip goes well for you, and look forward to more posts on it.

Monday August 14. Day two in the “Sue”. Went down to the locks and saw a large freighter pass through. Really interesting and amazing how little room they have to manoeuvre. From there we visited a retired cargo ship that was turned into a museum.

That pic was one of the displays inside the ship but it was a huge museum that we spent two hours in. The museum ship was 550 feet long,58 ft wide and 31 ft deep. It carried coal and steel. Really enjoyed this tour.

Back to the casino where we gambled the evening away. M was down on video poker but I had some keno luck.

Was an 800 dollar win. Can someone tell me why some photos are upside down? This is my first time trying to post pics.

So to wrap up our Kewadin stay we left up 385. Enjoyed our time there and found prices good except gas that was 3.99 a gallon. We are also visiting many new casinos and will have to pay for the rooms which is new for us as we can get most Caesar and Boyd free but many of these are different properties. However we will get some free rooms.
Next video will be a long drive through Northern Michigan
