Las Vegas help

Post by Bd131 »

I am planning a possible trip to Vegas in late December. This will be my first time there along with my son. We want to stay on the strip in the middle of most things or within walking distance to various casinos. At this time I have a a great price for air fare and hotel (we dont want to rent a car) due to the fact that we dont plan to drive much.

The casinos we have to choose from is Harrahs, Circus/Circus etc.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

ThanksWithout knowing much of anything about your preferences as to entertainment (I.E. mostly gambling or mostly rubbernecking...you know), I would definitely NOT recommend Circus/Circus unless your son is 6 years old.Seriously, that place is a ZOO with kids running loose everywhere except on the casino floor, and every once in a while, one of the critters escapes and ravages the floor inside the casino too!If you want to be in the center of things, the Flamingo is not bad for location and some good room deals can be had.  My kids liked to stay at Casino Royale after they had been a couple of times.  I've stayed at Ballys twice I think.  Nothing to write home about, but the rooms were clean and we had a good view of the fountains over at Bellagio.About the only one I would caution you away from would be Circus/Circus.  But then, I'm not a Strip Player.  I usually stay Downtown on Fremont.

I would first ask how much you are looking to spend on a room and go from there. Imperial Palace first comes to mind as it is centrally located and reasonable in price compared to some of the others in the area. Even midweek rates would be considered pricy for others such as Mirage, Excaliber or paris. Imperial Palace is aging but if you are looking for just a bed and a shower it might be o.k. plus it is linked with Harrahs and you can take their "free" shuttle to and from other Harrahs properties such as Paris, Bally's and Rio. Imperial Palace also has the car collection and there might be a discount entry fee for hotel guests. There are other nice inexpensive attractions but just as Mike said, it all depends on what you like. Good luck , Ted.

I'll repeat what I've heard from a few others. If you want to stay on the strip then stay somewhere you will enjoy. If you want to save money then stay downtown or off-strip.

I've stayed at Ballys, MGM and Flamingo with good results (though many years ago). I've heard lots of good reports about Paris.

If those are your only 2 choices, Harrah's is by far a better location.  They're rates are reasonable.  Casino not bad, rooms are clean and adequate...but make sure you get in the quiet towers (one is Carnival and that's loud all day long until around 3 am from the band righ outside).  I think the other is called Carnival towers.
I enjoyed Paris most of all I've stayed at, but that's where I had my biggest win, so that may be bias.
Several people mention Flamingo, I've stayed there and was not too thrilled with it.  Something goofy about the lighting bugs me.  It's also the casino where you'll find more street walkers than anywhere else.
I also really Enjoyed New York New York...but that is a bit at the south end.

Just my 2 cents.

Like the others I would recomend Harrahs over Circus circus if those are your 2 choices . Having stayed there albeit about 8 years ago the rooms were decent not fancy  not bad but who spends alot of time in them :) .The nicest thing about Harrahs is its location it is located pretty much right in the middle of everything on the strip so it makes a nice first time stay you can go either direction and check out all the other casinos which I highly recomend doing .It also has a free shuttle that runs over to the Rio Casino I cant recall but I think it stops running around 1 am  but the Rio is a real fun place with some nice places to eat ( seafood buffet or an all you can eat sushi place sorry I forget the names )The Rio is also fairly close to the Palms which a lot of people like for VP not sure if its walkable or just a quick cab to the Palms from there .
The only downside to Harrahs and generally for a good majority of the strip is good paytable VP . Also I dont think much of Harrahs buffet either .The ones at Planet Hollywood ,Bellagio, or the Rio Seafood ( although a bit pricey at 45 or so but can find 10 dollars off coupons pretty easy) are much better also I do recomend the Penn and Teller magic show at the Rio and you can get a package for the buffet and the show for less then both seperately it  makes for a nice evening .

If your looking to play a lot of VP I recomend taking the duece( bus ) to downtown its cheap 2 bucks  and if you go at night its a pretty nice tour of the strip especially if you can sit in the front seats on the top level of the bus .
My personal  favorites for Downtown VP are Main Street Station (full pay Double Bonus which is pretty much all I play and you can get their own micro brews which are quite good as a option for your comped drinks :)
and Four Queens fun atmosphere and decent ful pay Double bonus progressives .
If your big Sports fans I highly recomend the Hilton hotel and casino they have a great auditorium to watch events real nice VP and probably the nicest rooms for the price  that I have stayed in yet the only downside to there place is that they are not in easy walking distance to anyplace else but you can get there by monorail .

I hope this helps and have a great time !

Also dont forget to sign up for the various player clubs at places you like or would like to go back to on future trips many have free play and depending if you play there you might get some nice offers to come back .

ThanksCheck out the recent posts on "Topic: favorite casinos" and click on "strip hotel rooms" beginning on June 11, including my post, when I rave about Paris. Ask for "casino rates" unless comped room, as in next visit. Log on "Vegas free shuttle bus transportation". Tips on shuttles are expected and appreciated. On July 12, brbeav reported on another site that HOOTERS has a promo of $100 free slot play when you first sign up for their players card. Hope that is still in effect for your trip and when we get there again. We have been happy without a car in Vegas for years and had just parked it for the duration when we did have one. Palms has been best for VP for me, DDB, DW and LDW, .25 and $. Deuce bus $5 gets 24 hours of bus rides up and down strip and also can transfer to side streets to Orleans etc. Have fun and LUCK!

I really dont have a preference in any strip casino, just want to be centrally located and reasonably priced. When we travel we normally dont spend much time in the hotel room other than sleeping and maybe relaxing for an hour or so throughout the day.

I guess I can say I am confused by looking over the different casinos and hotels in Vegas through the travel sites. Though I travel to AC more than anywhere else I have a feel for what I have for choices there, but Vegas is confusing.

Thanks for the help and add more comments please.

Most or all Vegas hotel rates are higher on weekends. M-F trip would escape that. We have stayed in Vegas, then rented a car for a weekend and driven to Laughlin, where rates are less or comped. We also enjoy the scene in Laughlin. Another possibility, Check with your hotel. Most offer a free day bus ride plus buffet at Laughlin so you can check it out for a future trip. The strip will keep you busy for your first trip! NEXT trip we hope to check out GVR, Red Rock, Skyline and some station casinos after being encouraged by posts on this site.

My husband and I go to LV about three times per year. My favorite hotel is Paris, although we have stayed at Ballys, Harrahs, Flamingo, Imperial Palace and Treasure Island. I would recommend Harrahs over Circus Circus. Your location on the strip at Harrahs is much better than Circus Circus, as well as the resort. Imperial Palace is a good location with the rooms being adequate. Paris is lovely. The rooms are great, the restaurants are awesome. Mona Mi Gabi is my absolute favorite. Sitting outside eating an awesome meal and watching the Belagio waters. This is the reason to be on the strip in LV. Caresars is great too, but not in my price limit. I had my best luck at Ballys casino last trip. We are headed to Paris in early October. I have heard the slots are really tight with attendance down. I'll let you know.
