gambling and inflation
in the year 1999 the jackpot for a royal flush on video poker was $1,000 on a standard 25 cent game 5 credit bet. in 2001 it was 1000, 2005 it was $1,000 in 2011 it was $1,000
in 2023 it is still $1,000 for a royal flush on most 25 cent games.
1000 dollars american in 1999 equals about 1,800 dollars today or to view it the other way 1000 dollars today would be about 550 bucks in 1999. video poker does not weather inflation at all

But the total bet is still $1.25. So does that mean it is getting less expensive?

What does this even mean?
I guess if you wanted to show inflation, you should probably compare pay tables from 1999 to 2023. Chances are they're lower, which means on average it will cost more to get that royal.

Compare everything. Cost of driving to the casino 1999 vs 2023 and other expenses related to obtaining the Royal jackpot. Then throw in the reduced paytables, any changes in state and federal taxation of that jackpot. It would be an interesting equation but hard to calculate because there are dozens of factors.

Royals are still a good thing anyway you calculate it.

You seem to have overlooked the fact that the same inflationary situation affecting the payout also affects the value of the wager. The payout remains 800 for 1 (unless you're a short-coiner).Pugnacious Pug wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 3:47 pmin 2023 it is still $1,000 for a royal flush on most 25 cent games.

that is technically correct but the point i was kinda going for was a little more nuancedonemoretry wrote: ↑Thu Jun 01, 2023 6:38 amYou seem to have overlooked the fact that the same inflationary situation affecting the payout also affects the value of the wager. the bet itself 5 qurters or 1.25 represents the same unit of investment 1 bet
much like a $5000 cd in 1999 is like a $5000 cd in 2023. i guess i am needling anyone who gambles for a so-called living as opposed to just fun and enjoyable distraction. with declining paytables, 6:5 blackjack triple zero roulettee and casinos becoming much more stingy and tough in handing comps out, i can't see any possible reason except subjective enjoyment to gamble.
