Re: Money Management
Damule...
yes, probably a good idea we don't live in Vegas, although, it does sound tempting, doesn't it? On my December visit, I slept ONE hour combined over the first TWO days. Maybe once I've made all my millions I can have a condo there or something. However, there is something fun about staying at a hotel there as opposed to having a place there. I guess it makes it feel like more of a vacation.
I've always wondered what it would be like growing up as a child in Las Vegas and driving down this block and that block and having casinos and bars/grocery stores/gas stations with slot and vp machines.
From the people I talk when on vacation, the ones who have lived there for many years no longer enjoy the city and talk about moving. The younger crowd that is new to town seem to enjoy it more.
I remember when there in December, this lady (who everyone thought was a man and for good reason!) at the Orleans lost at least $5k and made it all back in an hour or two getting real lucky while betting $100-$600 a hand. you think that would be enough. But, sure enough, she was back the next day (this time on a Monday night) in the same clothes she had on the day before and was down another (at least) $5k!

While I venture forth unto casinos, gamble I do not.
A friend of mine who's an expert at college football sports betting calls it "investing" not gambling.

That is pretty much the view I do have.

I don't play enough to call it investing at this point. I call it entertainment. I don't have the bankroll (or time) for extended play at this time in my life and I'm also not counting on beating the casino using secret strategies to get ahead in life. For my level of play, it's all luck. When I lose, I had some fun. When I win... I had a lot more fun.
It also makes it more fun to me learning the correct way to play, choosing pay tables, etc so I get as many hands as I can for my money and the most chances to hit a big winner. You still might end up broke at the end of the trip, but you might bring home more than you left with as well (which I have never done on any other types of vacation).

How right you are Eduardo. All other vacations are strictly outgo, never any income. As a recreational player we just hit deal and take our chances. Albeit informed chances.

There might be an exception in there for scantily clad ladies on spring break. But I am neither a lady, nor on Spring break. And the scantily clad part is none of your business.

Dragged out the tinfoil, again, did we? Please omit the chamois and the filthy details. We're a respectable bunch and Boops intends to keep it that way!

I took up gambling years ago because of an Eagles Concert held at MGM Grand. Had never been in a casino before then. We LOVED Las Vegas. Wanted to return. But there was no way I could justify to myself, plugging money into a Slot that gave me no chance to improve my chances through skill.
So, I started learning VP Strategy and it hooked me. It was a challenge to see if I could learn it! I had to have SOMETHING to do when we were in Casinos!
Then I took up Blackjack because I would tire of playing VP. Same thing. Had to learn strategy and it was a challenge to me so I applied what little mental muscle I had to the task. I learned it. Then, after Blackjack became mundane...like a machine playing since every decision is predetermined by the cards you are dealt and that the dealer has showing, I took up Card Counting for those same reasons...it was a challenge.
These days, I play strictly to enjoy it. If I get tired, I walk around and watch people...or head up to the room and read. After all, ANYTHING is better than working!
