Re: 9/6 JOB vs NSUD
Here's a thought. You could play single coin, play any game you want, keep most of your money and have almost the same amount of fun. You'll give up about 1% long term, but it will cost you a lot less to play. The problem is the Royal. If you've never had one or you're just starting out, you'll probably want to kill yourself if you get one for $62.50. On the other hand, if you lose $300 every few hours you'll probably want to do the same thing. Video poker is a great game, but it can be a cruel master. Remember, the most powerful weapon you have in your battle with that machine is to stop when you've reached your limit of abuse... The machines will be there tomorrow!

If you had to pick between playing one of these two games, which would you choose and why?
Trying to determine bankroll requirements for an upcoming 5 day trip to Downtown Vegas.
Many casinos in the downtown area offer one or both of these games at the $0.25 level, which is where I play at. I normally play at about 500 hands an hour, so I estimate it would take about $150 bankroll (give or take) to last over a 2.5 - 3 hour playing session.
My score usually falls around 97% accuracy on both games, as I practice quite a bit and have played both in the casinos before.
JOB has less variance and is a bit easier to play with light drinking, but I like the higher expected return and the mini jackpot NSUD has for quad deuces.
Thoughts?Even ignoring the higher EV I would play NSUD over Jacks 11 days out of eleven.Jacks sucks and I say this as someone whose bread and butter for years was 10-6 Jacks.

Almost everything I've read on VP suggests to either play Max Coin or to short coin. And I've also read that the optimal strategy changes playing short coin versus max coin.
In my limited time playing VP, I have hit a true royal once on the $0.05 Loose Deuces machine at the D. Personally, if my bankroll was really limited, I'd probably play at a slower pace at max coin versus short coining the machine. Definitely would hate hitting a royal and only getting $62.50.

10/6 Jacks sounds like a game that used to be offered during the Golden Years of VP in Vegas - definitely wish I could've been playing during those great years so many talk about.
Not to deviate too far from the discussion about the two games, but does anyone here have thoughts about managing bankroll @ different times of the day? For instance, playing a higher denom game in the early part of the day when focus is higher and going down in denom as the day goes on? My gut would say that this makes the most sense for a player that also enjoys drinking while in Vegas. Not to say that I get drunk while playing, but I like to keep a buzz going from about lunchtime all the way through the rest of the day.
Regardless of whether you drink while playing or not, do you seem to have better focus playing earlier in the day?

Well, for 1500 hand sessions, $150 per session will last you awhile on either game. But JoB will definitely make you survive longer.
Risk of Ruin chances on 1500 hands max of quarters:
9/6 JoB: 20.83%; Avg. number of hands played (1500 max): 1409; Min hands played (10k sims): 279
NSUD: 36.9%; Avg. number of hands (1500 max): 1312; 25th percentile: 1156; Min hands played (10k sims): 293
So most of the time you won't go broke, but I would expect it to happen a time or two on a trip.
One other note about NSUD: VPFree2 says the Cal also has it for nickels, dimes. The D also has a dime coindropper. With the limited bankroll being able to lower stakes is the biggest key to be able to last your desired time limit. Or significantly slowing down your play.

A dodo bird game. I probably wasn't even legal to gamble the last time it existed. I dunno when it died though.

It lives on Bob Dancer's "Video Poker for Winners", but you can still lose at it..

Well, of course, it does pay less than "full pay deuces" after all. But I think I would trade the lower variance, easier strategy, and increased boredom of 10/6 Jacks over the 0.06% or so extra return of "full pay deuces". But I've never have hit a Royal on a 99%+ game anyway, so it would behave more like a 98.7% game to me.

Video poker is all about getting the royal. Give me a "boring" 9/6 job any day. I will stay in the game with flushes and full houses until the royal comes.
Ever play double double bonus or triple double bonus when a cold streak hits? It makes you want to jump out of a window.

Actually, I play TDB every chance I get. I like the AWAK 4K payoff, not having to rely on catching the elusive RF. TTF/kckr for 2K ain't bad either.
I totally agree with you that TDB is very high variance, and I have seen my fair share of cold streaks. That is why I am an advocate of money management in VP. When nothing happens, I move to other casino games, be they table games or slots.
I find this approach preferable to jumping out of a window, especially since there are no windows in the casinos.
