Re: Contest Strategy
And even then it may not be enough to win. Luck is a huge part of winning one of these contests.
Very true.

In a contest environment you almost have to go for the RF whenever you get close.

A few more thoughts after playing the first day of the 7 star contest:
The lowest score over 4000 in single-hand is currently 4215.
Say the first hand I play tomorrow I get a 4000 hand. I have 76 hands left to make over 215 more to more or less ensure moving on to the final round. It's pretty clear I should start playing best strategy in order to maximize my return from the 76 hands remaining.
But seeing as that 4000 hand will most often come on some later hand than #1 in a session, I should be playing best strategy from the get-go in order to avoid the disappointment of catching a top hand but not having enough points otherwise to make the final round, as opposed to "going for the RF" from the start -- at least until I've made those 215 points.

There's a big difference between playing the contests here and in a video poker tournament in a casino. Here they have so many entries that if you're not dealt premium hands, you have no chance. Since it's about the deal here, not the draw, strategy really doesn't matter much.In regular video poker tournaments (or the monthly contest here), far fewer people compete and your strategy matters a lot more. You need to know what kind of tournament you're facing. SPEED contests (which means all the hands you can play in xxx minutes count --- so playing fast is more important than playing accurately.) If you're limited to yyy hands in a casino tournament, speed doesn't matter at all (so long as you play all the hands in the given time). Now the rules posted by MF here are at least decent.Every tournament is different --- and the rule variations are key. In the archived articles on bobdancer.com there are a number of them talking about video poker tournaments --- usually because whatever tournament I was playing was "different" somehow --- which required a different strategy.
