Strategies differ with each game but even within the game itself, the  strategy will change based on the paytables.

I think this is one good reason why learning as much as possible about the game can be helpful. The deeper one's understanding the better chance they have to guessimate a paytable they've never seen. I've run into this situation when all the standard VP games have bad paytables and something else exists that I've never played before.

It's especially important when dealt 6 or more cards ...

I think there's some contradiction here...

For those of you just starting out honing your skills at Video Poker....I understand completely why you are asking "why" on some of the strategy plays.

However, don't get too caught up in the "logic" of the plays.  ....

But, for my part, I sincerely hope that you use these "logically" explained plays to underscore the correctness of the charts that you are using to learn the strategies.  ....

There is no easy way to learn it.  But to be successful in the casino, learn it you must!....

I agree that you need to trust the program but blatant "memorization" is not the key to "learning."  Understanding the why behind the correct move will always aid retention, coupled with repetition.

You're correct that you don't want to be thinking about the why during a hand, that's only during preparation.

We all learn differently and I know for most, they learn by doing.  I can teach a monkey to do "x" when he encounters situation "a."  But if he understands how it works, then it's easier to recall what to do when the situation arises.

Figuring out the "why" is good mental gymnastics.  I myself, didn't start trying to use "logic" on the strategy until after I learned it and seldom consiously think about it now unless asked.  But, I do understand that some folks absorb the strategy better with a more in-depth understanding as to "why" the math works out the way it does.  I have never "slighted" anyone for asking questions and have and will do my best to answer them if I can.  No guarantees as to the accuracy of course.  <LOL>
