Re: Gambling with an Edge --- July 12
Thanks for the reply - will be checking out the JoB at the GC. Playing just the standard DW for now (started with the whole VP thing a week ago but I'm hooked) and also JoB. Any recommendation for taking up another DW variant that isn't too complicated for a beginner?
There is no such thing as "standard DW." There are at least 20 different pay schedules. The strategic variations between them are very significant. Whether you hold one pair or two, for example. Or whether a pair is more or less valuable than 4-to-a-flush. And what is the ranking of a deuce with various 3-card-straight-flush combinations compared to a flush, straight, or 3-of-a-kind.
And, approximately, they all are about equally easy to learn but you need to learn the specific one you'll be playing. And trying to learn more than one when you're a beginner is asking to get confused.
Bob.

If the OP would just come out and say what he's studying and wants to play and the denomination and area (strip, downtown, summerlin, henderson, boulder highway), it'd be easier to make recommendations. If you want to play quarters, practice Full-Pay (1-2-2-3-5-9-15-25-200-800). We can steer you toward the game. If you want to play higher stakes, practice NSU (1-2-3-4-4-10-16-25-200-800). Both are good choices, but with Full-Pay you don't need to time with promotions to make the game positive. You just have to hold the right cards.

Thanks Bob and QD. When I meant "standard DW" I was referring to Full-Pay DW, which I am learning on the VPW software, as well as FP JoB (in both cases the regular one line play and sometimes STP and Multi Strike)Will be in Vegas for a week in August. staying at the Encore although looking to do most of my VP downtown. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

You do know that MultiStrike requires strategy changes at the different levels to maximize your return right? (Not so for STP, which is why I like it. :)You won't find Full-Pay Deuces downtown. The best you'll find is NSU. If you want to play that, I'd suggest Main Street Station. They juice it with scratchers worth a minimum of $2 for natural 4-of-a-kinds (no wilds, but 4 deuces counts). For 25c Full-Pay Deuces near the strip your best bet is probably The Palms. That 25c 3/5-line JoB STP is right across the street too. Any of the peripheral Stations also has FPDW. Palace station only has it at 5c. Sam's Town, the only Boyd casino that does I think, has 25c FPDW too. This isn't perfect, but it's a really good start: http://www.vpfree2.com/video-poker/search(Note that you have to search DW44 to find the NSU paytable)I won't go into 9/6 Jacks because it can be found throughout Las Vegas at any denomination you want to play, as the above link will show you.

Thanks QD. I am aware of the strategy changes at the different levels of MultiStrike and I seem to be making very few mistakes there. I also think it's a fun game. Will be checking out some of the casinos you mention for FPDW.
