Well, I believe you.  Afterall, you admit you don't know vp strategy very well, and you don't regard paytables as being very important - so it's a natural consequence.  The occasional big hit, such as the recent one you enjoyed, will,  inevitably, be eaten up.

Please read the following excerpt from my interview with Dr. William G. McCown, foremost authority on problem gambling in America. I wasn't supposed to post this until the end of the month, but it is needed now.












FK Question: In the DSM-IV the fourth symptom listed is “Escape”. The subject
gambles to improve mood or escape problems.”From what I know of gamblers, this
describes a lot of them. The issue, as I understand it, is that gambling to
numb-out creates a negative feedback loop where the person's major coping mechanism becomes the source of their stress. How serious
is this and how much should people avoid gambling as a stress coping strategy?
Dr. McCown Answer: It is a very serious problem. The classic notion is that there are
two types of chronic gamblers. One is those who want thrills and action, while
the other is made up of people who seek relief from personal problems and bad
feelings. Women, by the way, are more likely to be in that last group, but men
are catching up.  Often, these “relief gamblers”
are anxious or depressed. They often start with the penny slots and work their
way up to the big time. These people need different treatment than more typical
pathological gamblers. The confrontational approach taken by some self-help
groups may drive these people to a breakdown or even suicide. Fortunately,
groups like Gamblers Anonymous are beginning to be respectful of the fact that
the second group of gamblers needs more empathy and understanding.
FK Comment: I’ve had some personal
experience with such folk. I wish there was more I could do, but from what you
are saying, confrontation could be dangerous. I will take that under
advisement.Empathy is what's called for, got it? Everyone makes mistakes, there is no shame in being wrong, and there is pride to had in bettering ourselves. If not for our errors, life would be a lot duller and we'd have nothing to learn. Given different life experience,  education and brain structure it is only natural that different people come to different conclusions. It's true everyone can't be right, but at least show empathy and understanding for the reasons for the difference.I never think, "that could never happen to me". I always try to think, "there by the grace of god go I".~FKP.S. If you are an atheist replace "god" in the previous sentence with "Joe Pesci".

Backsider, really? What in hell is your problem the guy tells you what he does and you basically call him a liar. Another sends you a book autographed and you spit in his face. I suggest you check yourself son. your fingers are writing checks you cannot cash.
 Wake up edog, the guys in the sales business and he pitches a story that doesnt pass the smell test just for starters. I ommited this at first, but just look at what he said about stocks and bonds multiplying and if you know the market youll get it. He also could have told us his tale without all the "Im wealthy and so special stuff and you know what.......you probably arent". I, like most vp players, aint a millionaire. Whats the point in telling a bunch of vp stiffs that hes better than the rest? It just doesnt sit right and I know most here feel that way. Youre wrong about frank. I have never spit on him. Maybe thats the type of intolerance you whine about when someone doesnt agree with you. In fact it is.

Frank... thank you for words on problem gambling.  I propose a 3rd kind of problem gambler that includes myself.  I am not a risk taker (safe driver, no speeding, no roller coasters, use coupons, 4 smoke alarms, mild mannered and responsible).  I do not consider myself anxious or depressed. Nor have I been abused.  Am not compulsive or a smoker or a drinker.  It is not relief from personal problems.  I am however fascinated with numbers, probability,  random events, weather, stories about the future, patterns in nature, math, game theory, chess, physics, etc.  Gambling holds a deep real fascination.  I trust in pay tables and even yelled "hooray for mathematics" when I held AAA2 and won. [It wins less frequently but has higher overall payoff, in triple double]  I have met other math brains who gamble too much as well.   They constitute a small but definite sub group. By the way, the danger is not so much money but rather how my brain is re-shaped to dream of odds and to ride this ship of numbers.  Oh oh....I have this casino coupon to redeem ....

Since my brush with cancer I get up everyday and ask myself, "Will the world miss me when I'm gone?" When all I did was play machines for a living, the answer was not only, "NO", it's unlikely anyone would even have noticed


 
Although Ive never met you Frank, Id sure miss some of your readings as well as others Im sure.
