Re: TRUMP SUPPORTERS ONLY...others don't read
The 1st Minnesota at Gettysburg.
In April 1861, one thousand loyal men marched from Minnesota to defend the Union. For two years they fought in almost every major battle in the East and were reduced to under 300 men. Units in the Civil War didn't get replacements, rather whole new units were formed.
On the second day of Gettysburg in July 1863, A Union General who was a political appointee made a terrible decision. Rather than hold the line where ordered, he took his entire Corp forward a thousand yards where they were isolated and destroyed. It also left a huge gap in the Union lines. General Hancock, commander of the wing saw the gap and ordered reinforcements but they were over a mile away and would not get there in time to stop the six Rebel Regiments pouring into the gap. All he had to stop them was the already depleted 1st Minnesota who had been pulled off the line to get a few minutes rest in reserve.
Hancock rode up to the unit and ordered them to attack and defeat the Rebels. Outnumbered by at least six to one and some say ten to one, the 1st Minnesota formed a battle line two deep and all 262 members charged into the fray. Hancock needed five minutes to get the newly arriving troops into positions.
The Minnesota Regiment gave him fifteen. In those fifteen minutes 215 members became casualties and the Regiment won immortality.
Yesterday, the president of our Country didn't sing their praise, but instead praised the man who they helped defeat.
