A very succinct, fact free dialogue.

among the announced DEM candidates for potus, the one leading in the polls took a position on voting rights. sanders stated he was in favor of allowing convicted felons, still in prison, to vote. this would include those convicted of murder, rape, etc. just think, the BOSTON BOMBER could vote, just like you.
add this to the list of positions taken by multiple leading DEMS, including;
-open borders
-abortion up to birth
-medicare for all, including illegals
-reparations
-college loan forgiveness
-guaranteed income for all, including those unwilling to work
-socialism

Back to the original post.... I suspect that the parents of the millennial had a much better life than their parents. The lifestyle they raised their millennials in was one in which cannot be afforded today. Parents still having the ability to help their children, do. Which bring us to a bunch of lazy millennials. (Why fish when someone feeds you? ) The big question is what happens to the next generation.

considering the statistics on how unprepared many americans are for retirement, maybe the lifestyle that parents gave their millennial children was not one that those parents could afford.
absolutely agree with you about how much better it is to teach someone to fish, rather than just give them a fish.

I hope the high schools start mandating a course in managing finances and replace one of the useless other courses with this course.

Do any of you actually know any Millenials? Most of the ones I deal with are sharp as tacks and very motivated. Not motivated to what their parents and grandparents but driven in their own direction.
Perhaps if older people took some responsibility for the mess they and their people created. Next time you are in Vegas, spend an afternoon downtown at Container Park and the blocks surrounding it. Meet the Millenials who are literally homesteading and reviving neighborhoods their parents were afraid to drive through.
Did you folks know that Millenials represent the largest age group attending Financial Peace University and most of them don't want to end up falling into the financial traps their parents fell into.
It's better to stay home and save to buy a house than move out and pay rent while trying to save, but you mock them for it.
Which generation turned a budget surplus into a twenty billion dollar hole? We got ours and left the bill for our kids to pay. Very nice work if you can get it.

All these answers are credible, but I think this issue is a little deeper. Ten years ago we had a financial downturn that was unequaled since the Great Depression. A whole generation of kids found themselves unable to get an entry level job. Skilled construction workers were flipping burgers for a living. Being in Real Estate at the time, I witnessed this myself. What happened?
The parents sent the kids off to college. The kids who didn't sat in the basement playing video games. Easy college loans fueled mass enrollment. Colleges found it easy to raise tuition. The kids that attended college built up huge debt. The intellectuals promised them big paying jobs if they got a degree. As usual they started at the bottom and were caught between their college debt and the reality of employment. Today, many don't have a skill and don't know what they want to do in life. The first thing these kids should have been asked is "What do you like to do?" No one asks this question, they just assume everyone needs to get a degree. In what?
This whole idea that you need a degree to get a high paying job is baloney. Most all the wealthy people I know don't have degrees. They didn't have the time. They started small businesses and worked hard. I want my Doctor to have a degree and the more the better. Does my car mechanic or my plumber need one?
Some kids are lazy. Some parents are not parenting. The colleges are not being honest with their students. No one is going to hire a green graduate starting at $100,000 a year. What we need in this country is an old approach brought back. We need more trade schools and apprentice programs. If you own a company and can't find trained employees, train your own. After you have, pay them fairly so they stay with you. I built my company with people who loved to work with computers. My company had a few college graduates, one with a master's degree and one with a PHD. The rest just loved what they did, were good at it and were paid well.

K you guys baited me into it. Not too many millennials here I expect. Yes, I play video poker and that means I spend a lot of time hanging out near old people in casinos. Rarely talk to them though. It is more of a hobby while I make sports bets but hey, I'm doing pretty well at it (Up 7 grand this year W00t!). Might have to give up sports betting LOL. Any way since you brought up this millennial topic I've been suckered in. There is such a perception of millennials that is totally unfair. You think we have been given the same world you were given. NOT true. Do you have any idea what college costs these days? And if you don't think you "need" college you are right. But if you think it's easy finding a GOOD job without it, you are WRONG. Why? because old people are doing the hiring and they value an education. Which isn't 2 bad. But like I said, EXPENSIVE.
What did you all pay in tuition? I'd love to hear that. What was your debt when you got your first real job? I'm betting close to ZERO.
And yeah, you have an impression of millennials. That's fine. We have impressions of old people too. Think about that. you've earned it as well. I know a bunch of old people who are broke ass living off social security and then they like to complain about "millennials" not being financially responsible. While they hang out in casinos playing quarters and even nickels. Too funny! Like I said, at least I am a winner. And maybe I do live at home but not because I'm lazy. Parents are cool with it and it sets me up for a better future. That's called being a good parent cause you care about your kids. Dont trash them for being loving parents! I will move out when it makes sense. Ya'll are stuck in a 1960's America mindset you grew up in. Did you know that in MOST of the world families live together? Sometimes their whole lives? This kick the kids out of the house crap to teach them a lesson is bull$$$$.
Any way, have to roll. I will try to check back later but I don't hang out here a lot. Been reading some. Learned a little. Finally signed up, so thanks for that any way LOL. Have a great night all. Stay old!

I am an old person who is more sympathetic to young people than most. I can remember being a young person right out of school. I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. I didn't have time to think about that. All I wanted was a job. The baby boomer generation grew up when American business was at it's height. All my friends were construction workers. Back in the sixties, those were the best paying jobs. Anyone could go do to a local business and get a job that paid well. If your father was employed there or he was a union worker, you were almost guaranteed to be hired. After a few years or so, you bought a new Ford and maybe a small house. The Vietnam war changed a lot of those plans. Today, things are a lot different.
If I was in my mid twenties or later and still living at home, I would reevaluate my situation. Unless your parents need you, you are not doing yourself or your parents any favors. As parents, we want our kids to be happy. We want them to be functioning adults and have lives and families of their own. Living at home is not going to get you there. Your parents won't tell you this because they love you. I will.
The longer you wait the harder it will be for you start a family. Finding a decent woman is hard when you are living with your parents. If you have to, work two jobs. I did it and it didn't hurt me. Keep your eyes open for opportunity and don't be afraid to take it.
Millennials have it harder than we did, that is a fact. My grandson is going through this right now. He's 27 years old and still living at home. Time sneaks up on you. He won't be young forever. His parents had dreams for him. They wanted him to have it better than they did. They feel like they failed him somehow. They didn't, he is failing himself. Life is hard.

That decent woman part is so true. Luckily, I found mine at age 20 at UCONN. 50 years later, it is still like age 20. Based on what I see at the casino, malls, etc., yikes!!! I wouldn’t want to have to start over now. I had better not elaborate further.
