Please check your smoke alarm batteries

Post by billryan »

A couple of weeks ago, a fire destroyed a house in my old neighborhood on Long Island. A 62-year-old man, his wife, and their teenage daughter died. Three other children were away at school when it happened.
Yesterday the fire marshalls released their findings- someone improperly extinguished a cigarette and it smoldered for hours. As sad as that it, there were two smoke detectors in the home, but one had no battery and the others battery was expired.
Smoke detectors can save lives, but only if they are maintained.

So true. One of mine had a warning low battery beep last week. Changed them all. Very sad story. Too bad they had to be smokers. They would still be here.

We change batteries when the time changes. We are probably replacing perfectly good batteries but it is a lifesaving small investment. You can't have overly fresh batteries and you can't have too many smoke detectors. I know a couple who have burglar alarm sensors in every room and on every window, and yet two smoke alarms for the entire 4,000+ square foot home! :(
