Here's why I don't just mindlessly support Cops
What does everyone think of this guy in this story? For those of you out there who automatically think every police officer is "good" simply because.... he's a police officer, I would implore you to adopt my approach of taking and judging each person or each cop one at a time....there certainly are many good exceptional law enforcement officers, but there are many scumbags and jerks out there too...read on

I think we should be thankful for the police. It's a tough job and very dangerous. However, like all professions there are good and bad players. I have a fishing buddy who is a retired police officer. He also happens to be the most bigoted person I have ever met. When all the police shootings were going on, I asked him what he thought. He said cops shoot to kill because a dead person can't sue you. I don't think every cop thinks this way, but some do.If you go around picking fights with the police, you will most likely get one. Cops are people just like everyone else. They're not all criminals and they're not all saints. When you are asked a question or told to do something by a policeman, do what he says and keep your comments to yourself. "Angry young man" is not what you want written on your tombstone.

Phil, well said....you essentially echoed my main point but with some good details from your own personal life via your buddy the retired bigot. I agree about it's best to just submit when there's an issue and wait for your day and time in court if you're sure you are in the right.
My cousin is recently retired but he was chief of my town for over ten years and spent thirty as a officer, and he is the source of most of my own opinions and views about law enforcement.

I thought Phil said that his fishing buddy was a retired police officer, not a retired bigot.
DaBurglar if your cousin is the source of most of your own opinions and views about law enforcement wouldn't that mean that those are your cousins opinions and views about law enforcement and not yours?
As for a dead person not being able to sue, I do not agree with that because there are many cases in court right now filed against police by the families and estates of dead people.
But I agree that the majority of police ARE good but as often is the case; we hear more about the bad ones than we hear about the good ones.
Edited to add: The charge usually is "Failure to obey a lawful command."

I really should just let the absolute hollow pointlessness of this rhetorically cynical "question" just stand by itself and echo thru eternity, but for the sincerely interested readers out there I will respond with the obvious answer:
My cousin doesn't solely have opinions about cops and law enforcement and race relations by themselves....he has actual real experience and facts .... Seeing this, I pensively consider what he says and what his views are, and choose to agree and share his views.

I may get the numbers a little wrong, but several weeks ago, I remember reading an article in the WSJ, I believe that in 1970, NYC police shot 390 civilians and 90 or so died. In 2016 they shot 39 civilians and 6 died. If this is true, how is there an epidemic of cops abusing civilians? BTW, NYC police handled the terrorist attack yesterday quite well.

Awesome post and excellent point! Seriously this is the kind of thoughtful, researched reply post i wish more people would make instead of kneejerk fits of hostility and petulance.
What you just demonstrated Carcoonter is how today's media, specifically all the interconnected instantaneous electronic media, literally create issues where there is no issue, or badly distort issues. The data you cited debunk both narratives, one that says cops are rampantly abusing civilians, and the other that says civilians are out of control and deliberately provoking cop confrontations.
Today's unintelligent mean-spirited society much prefers to just scapegoat or demonize certain segments or groups, most often racial minorities or religious groups. I personally am sick of the constant "Us vs. Them" storylines that prevail on stations like FOX News, or from conservative racist blowhards like Rush Limbo, or Left wing racist blowhards like Al sharpton & Jesse J.
Yep that's right... Rush limbAWWWW and Al (not too)-Sharpton are two peas in the same position.

I just saw that the Dems pulled an ad in Virginia that had a pickup truck with a confederate flag and a Gillespie bumper sticker running down 4 minority children. What timing in light of yesterday's real terrorist attack in NYC. That ad may cost them the Virginia governor's election.

When it hits close to home and the cops are family and a close family friend, it's a whole different story.

That works both ways. A family member of mine settled a suit with the local PD after an on duty Officer engaged in illegal lewd behavior during a routine traffic stop. At first ,no one believed her, but then the scumbag did the same thing to a female Officer from another department. That Department set up a sting operation and caught him in the act. If he hadn't screwed with that female cop, he'd still be pulling that ****.
