Merry Christmas DB...just catching up on some reading here before the day gets a little hectic. Funny you mentioned Yale in your post. Yale is almost in my back yard. The buildings are beautiful. I will never know if it was a mistake or not, but I turned down Yale (got accepted) for UCONN. Had visions of being another Jaques Cousteau. Was supposed to go to Woods Hole Mass. and study up there instead of on campus. The short version is I stayed on campus. Anyway, education in my view is what you make of it whether it be what is learned on the street, in trades, or in the best institutions. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all...Olds...
I am a big UCONN Basketball fan, I have been ever since the early 1980s BEFORE they won all those championships (Mens and Womens Basketball)     I am a season ticket holder at Gampel Pavillion, but since the women are so DOMINANT, I often give away my women's tickets because who wants to see 50 point blowouts all the time lol!     Mohegan Sun clearly has a cozy relationship with UCONN because they have all these promotional spots in their casino and in their restaurants (they have sandwiches named after all the UCONN female basketball stars from the past, and "Geno's Place" is named after coach Geno Auriemma! The only "real" sport Harvard has done anything in is NCAA Hockey.....Ivy League schools are the only NCAA programs who do NOT give atlhetic scholarships, so there ya go.......

Um DaBurglar your statement about Ivy League schools and scholarships is not entirely accurate. First I'm guessing that you are talking about Division I schools? Because we all know that Division III schools do not give athletic scholarships. Secondly because Ivy League schools have such massive endowment funds this allows them to give need based aid on a much broader basis compared to a state run or otherwise publicly run university. We all know that need based aid grants are also not as closely scrutinized by the NCAA as scholarship awards are, whether they be full or partial scholarships. We won't get into NAIA schools.

As for Ivy League schools not giving athletic scholarships; if you are infering that this somehow makes them scholastically better than schools like Northwestern, Stanford, or a host of others then I'm sure you may be in for a debate.

Edited to add: The University of Chicago disbanded their football program because the school wanted to devote itself to: education; research; and, scholarship. We all know what the University of Chicago is famous for, beside Harold (Red) Grange?... so there ya go.

Um, no we don't. He went to Univ. of Illinois in Champaign. They aren't getting rid of their football team anytime soon, even though they are pathetic...

Oops, I meant Jay Berwanger. The UIniversity of Chicago was where the Manhattan Project got its start.

An interesting mix of other University of Chicago alumni: Carl Sagan, Marilu Henner (Taxi), Elliot Ness, Harry Morgan (Dragnet and MASH), Roger Ebert, Ed Asner (Lou Grant) David Axelrod, Milton Friedman (recipient of the 1976 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences) and John B Watson (American psychologist who established the psychological school of behaviorism).

Even if you don't play at Mohegan Sun, it is worth a trip to try the Lasagna at Geno's Pub. Nice place and usually not too busy. One of the few bargains at Mohegan. $ 10.99 and there is enough for 2. Comes with a real nice fancy salad and bread. Very, very, good imo. Of course DB if you are there when I am, your $ won't be any good. We also go to many of the Ct. Sun games. They always seem to catch some former UCONN stars for the team. Those WNBA girls really work and play hard for very little pay.

Oh, I did just hear that as the old vp machines die, some more modern ones are coming. No details, but I suspect similar to the ones at Caesars. They already copied Caesars tier system in many ways.

Of course I only meant Div One schools.....Harvard's "need" based scholarships are totally centered on the student's ability to pay, not whether they are also playing sports, so I dont understand why you even mentioned that except that you were infering its how Ivy league schools get athletes to attend......obviously thats not the case if you bother to notice the last time any Ivy school competed in a major bowl game or made the final four. And no I am not infering that the lack of athletic scholarships is the reason Ivy schools are "better" than other schools....there are dozens of "great schools" with great programs, and clearly the Ivy league is at the top of this group, but it also depends on what field of study you want to pursue, and mostly on what a person does with the education and the abilities they have when the leave college and enter the workforce/society.  I know a few bums who went to Havard, and I know several filthy rich individuals who are self made who attended schools like Glendale (California) community college, and Wichita State.  Such a debate as you call it is totally pointless..... But is also goes without saying if you send your kid to Harvard (if they get in), whatever field of study they choose they will have a definite leg up on most others provided they know what to do with it and have a lot on the ball besides.....simply "dropping the H bomb" these days only goes so far, you must have depth of ability and character to take full advantage of it.....M.I.T. is as good if not better than Harvard but they have even less athletic endeavors.   California Institute of Tech is as good as MIT in any and all fields and departments they have in common, but it is extremely science heavy whereas, at MIT, if you want to study economics or even sociology you can.....

Thats nice of you to say my money is no good, but its more likely that I invite you to AC and  you enjoy Gallaghers steak on me at Resorts......I ate the Geno Lasagna once, and I must have gotten a bad batch cuz it sat in my stomach like a Bavarian paper weight made out of petrified wood)......but I have had others say the food is good and a good value just like you do so I chalk that up to my typical shotty luck.    I have never been to a WNBA game in the Mohegan arena, but I agree, many former UCONN "Lady Huskies" are floating around today's WNBA......but many of the women players actually do make decent money playing in Europe and in south america during the WNBA's Lonnnnng off0season.....thats partly why the keep the WNBA seasons so short. Best UCONN women's player ever was obviously Diana Taurasi (and she was arguably one of the top three women players in the entire history of women;s college basketball.)   I actually saw her when she was a High school prodigy out in California (in the late 1990s when I lived and worked out there....she was in a lot of the papers and when Geno Auriemma and UCONN came calling, I was hoping she'd choose them and she did!  Magic Johnson saw her play and actually remarked that her talents were good enough that she could play with the boys.....and if you saw her play you know what he is talking about!)

Thank you for the campus tour DaBurglar, it was very eye opening, NOT. You not only are a jerk but a pompous one at that. In my neck of the woods we would refer to you as a "topper." A topper is a person who comes back over the top of another person, an example being: "I caught a bass that was 48" long and weighed 50 pounds." Instead of you saying, wow great, you instead say something like; well I caught a bass that was 54" long and weighed 60 pounds.

What kind of a leg up has Harvard given you? As for where my child decides to continue their education, I don't care as long as they are happy. I don't envision Harvard being any more difficult to get into because, afterall, you got in.
