I would never play online since it's not regulated in the same way and you don't know what you're getting. So I've only played in the casino.
The few minutes I played some slots convinced me that it wasn't for me.
I personally dislike slots for a lot of the same reasons that I DO like video poker.

Even though video poker is still a game of luck, I like that I have the ability to choose what I hold and have some control over my destiny.  I could throw away something to go for the winner and even if my odds at hitting it are less, at least it was a decision I made either way. That also means that by learning the games I can make smarter plays rather than mistakes that would lead to lower payouts. I like that there is some skill to the game, even though the cards are based on chance.

Of course, this is helped by the fact that the games pay out quite well when played properly.  Even what is considered a low paying pay table in VP is a lot better than a lot of other forms of gambling out there. Of course I look for the best pay table I can find, and so far have spent very little time at the lower ones.

And there are some chances for really big wins, even on a somewhat low budget. You can play for quite a while to give yourself a chance at those wins and have some fun at it without a huge bankroll.

I still haven't hit anything really huge (no royals in the casino), but I'm ahead so far and have had a great time in my limited experience.

Because I can (and do) win money money playing the game.

It can also be a lot of fun when good things happen. Like today, it wasn't 5 minutes after sitting down that I hit four aces for 2000 credits. I moved over to another machine while waiting for the hand pay. Just a couple minutes after getting paid I hit again for another 2000 credits.

how old are you?

Older than dirt, but not as old as oej719.

I'm with Eduardo here. The lack of regulation keeps me away from online casinos. In addition, I'd rather get out into a casino and enjoy the atmosphere, collect the comps (free food and rooms) and socialize with other gamblers.

I love video poker but would never play outside of casinos and this site. A lady never tells her age. I only play penny slots if I've won a big video poker jackpot and just for the bells and whistles.

Los Angeles Resident, age 51.Video Poker Rocks! Although luck is the most important factor after your perfect play, it still gives one more of a chance to win over the long run.I practiced for a year with software before venturing into casinos.  Over the past two years +, I have made on average 14-16 weekend trips per year to casinos either in Vegas, Palm Springs or San Diego.  To date, I have hit 23 royal flushes... and on a five play machine at Morongo I was dealt 5 royal flushes within the first ten minutes of play.  The RF's have been on full play, not full play, and down right poor pay out schedules...again, luck has to be there. And sometimes, the 4 aces with a kicker or the four deuces with kickers have been far larger than some of my royals, depending on the denomination of course.I have done just as well at the Indian casinos as I have in Vegas (I usually play the Palms, Red Rock, Green Valley or Sam's Town).  This past year my w2g's at Barona were about 15k in four visits. With the good luck also comes bad, too. I borderline addiction, now. The hardest thing to do is to walk away from the casinos when you're winning, and to stay away from the ATM's when you've lost your bankroll.Hope my VP life history didn't bore you too much.

Ca. resident almost as old as Shadow but not as old as OEJ! No online gaming, too risky! VP gives you the opportunity to control a good percentage of your payback vs. putting in a bill and hit spin reels. I do occasionally play slots to break the monotony though! Why would you give almost all of your gaming money to the casino of your choice if you didn't have to?

I play VP for the reason Eduardo gave - I have more control over my destiny than I would playing slots.  With the VP paytables I can also make informed decisions about what to play.

Shadowman used the line about being older than dirt but not as old as oej719, so I'll just echo that.  Sorry, oej.

I just play in casinos, not online, as the online sites aren't regulated.  At the risk of sending this thread off on a tangent, does anyone have any thoughts about whether they'd like to see that happen?  I'm relatively close to the local casinos, but regulated online casinos might appeal to the folks here who don't have easy access to the real thing.

Only if they included coin flipping so I could use my special flips.  Then you'd go on some drunken rant about how you could repeat 65 flips in succession of either heads or tails and even wrote a book about such a feat!
