I'm not familiar at all with video poker terminology, so I'm not sure what the pay table was. What does 8/5 pay table signify?

I'm sure it says on this website somewhere, I'll do a lil bit of research.

 
In the case you cited, 8/5. Eight to One is the return for a Full House and Five to One is the return for Flush.  A five coin bet would pay 40 for a FH and 25 for a Flush.
Of course, when evaluating paytables it is necessary that you look at all the returns and not just the Full House and Flush. Having said that, the flush and full house returns , with all other returns being equal, are typically the ones Casinos mess with the most.

Slayde, Faygo is correct in saying to pay attention to all pays as their are some machines marked bonus poker with 10/8 schedules but pay 1 for 1 on 2 pair hands. As a few here on the forum pointed out to me, this lowers your expected return (ER) over the life of your VP play.

The pays for Full House/Flush for any given VP game of the Jacks or Better type with one coin bet.   That 8/5 translates to 40 paid for a Full House and 25 paid for a Flush with a five coin bet.  It's a kind of shorthand, because those two pays are the ones that you'll see vary by casino and denomination being played.   The complete pay table is for all winning hand types - Royal Flush down to High Pair.

Perhaps this will be the start of something special. In Oct. 07 my wife got on an incredible hot streak. First trip, she accidentally hit max play (10 coin-instead of 5) on a $ machine. Three hands later she drew the RF. The next day she hit RF on a quarter machine. The next week we returned for our second trip. She hits a progressive RF twenty minutes after another player hits the progressive RF on the same machine. Waiting for payout, she hits 4 A's. We decided to move to another casino. Sure enough hits a $RF and then plays $5 VP and hits 4 A's again. Three weeks later on our third trip she hits another RF. The next week she returns to the same machine and hits another RF. Six RF's in four trips.

Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a great run.

i'm not sure if i'm more jealous over all the jackpots your wife hit or the fact you went on so many gambling trips in such a short period of time.

The losses happened over a period of about 5 years, so he was losing "only" $50K or so a year.  I'm sure that he began borrowing at some point to finance his play (probably home equity loans and credit cards), then lost it and couldn't repay the loans.    Hence, the bankruptcy filing.
 
That information's public, and under his real name.  Someone posted a link here a long time ago to his county government's server with all the gory details, and there's a lot of them.  I did accounting work for many years (different type of accounting), but when I looked at that filing I went...eek! 
 
I don't know how much of the losses were with VP, but he also does sports betting and maybe the ponies as well.    If there's a game in town, he'll play it.  He really does have a serious gambling monkey on his back.
